A BRAND NEW SIMS 3 WORLD : SHETLAND HARBOUR
And here we are ... At last :D
10 years ago, Rope crafted a remarkable world, inspired by Starlight Shores, and generously given away to the community : Brightwater.
We embraced this gift, transforming and reshaping it, creating an island to eliminate distant terrain, and thus, Shetland Harbour was born ...
While many creators have fashioned stunning Sims 3 worlds with a Northern charm—like Saaqartoq, Greymont Bay, Lillebror, or Plymouth Isles—ours, stands a little apart.
Shetland Harbour is a unique blend : a touch of Aurora Skies, a hint of Moonlight Falls, and a dash of the unfortunate Barnacle Bay, all interwoven with our own vision of course. It is a vast yet easily navigable world, balanced between lightness and richness, featuring nearly all the Rabbit Holes the game offers.
Our aim was to craft a cohesive and vibrant world, one that feels alive and contemporary, with harmonious architecture and a spirit that invites exploration and delight :)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Welcome to Shetland Harbour, a picturesque coastal town nestled between rolling green hills and a fantastic bay … It is a beautiful medium/large-sized world, a community nestled on its own secluded island, accessible only by ferry. The town is known for its charming cobblestone streets, a vibrant fish market, and a rich history dating back centuries, dotted with quaint cottages, a bustling coast, and a grand lighthouse standing guard at the harbor’s entrance ...
This hidden gem is a haven for sheep, but don't let that fool you – Shetland Harbour is far from a sleepy place. With its rich maritime history, the town offers a unique blend of tradition and vibrant local culture.
Designed to capture the essence of a northern European island, Shetland Harbour offers a self-contained community with 100 lots in total : 65 residential lots + 35 community lots. Each Lot ( except the Old Renovated Factory ) is fully furnished.
In addition, there are multiple sheep ( all by Murfeel ) fields here and there – the latter being especially dear to the local culture, a close-knit community, where the ocean's presence is always felt and the simplicity of rural life is celebrated.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Shetland Harbour combines a lively downtown with peaceful suburbs and serene neighborhoods, featuring quaint cottages, charming gardens, and scenic paths through lush greenery.
The town's historic churches, like Old Church, Albert Church or Lux Chapel, are steeped in tales of ancient rituals and ghostly apparitions ... Albert Church, built on a Druidic site, is haunted by druid spirits, while Lux Chapel is known for the ghost of a sailor, seen on stormy nights ...
The mysterious stone circle inside the Graveyard, Ghost Place, adds to the island's mystical allure. Rumored to be a portal to another realm, it activates during celestial alignments, with visitors reporting strange occurrences. Town elders speak of a prophecy foretelling the return of ancient spirits and the awakening of the island's mystical powers. Signs include a rare star alignment, the stone circle's awakening, and three chosen individuals with the island's ancient bloodline ...

• Harbor Bay : The central feature of Shetland Harbour is its expansive bay. The bay is a natural harbor with calm, crystal-clear waters, making it ideal for fishing and sailing. It is surrounded by gently sloping hills and cliffs that provide stunning vistas of the sea. The marina is bustling with fishing boats, sailboats, and yachts sometimes … It’s the hub of maritime activity, with a fish market ( aka Grocery Store ), boat repairs, and a sailing club ( aka Business and Journalism Center )
• Lighthouse District : Right beside the Harbour, stands the Lighthouse Point, this district features historical homes and buildings, including a Norman cottage, a strange Diner and higher into the Hills, a fantastic museum dedicated to the town’s maritime history and a recent Hospital ready to welcome all the citizens of Shetland Harbour :)
• Beaches : The Coastline is dotted with sandy beaches, perfect for beachcombing, picnics, and bonfires. These areas are popular spots for locals and tourists alike. And you may want building some Coastal Houses for your Sims which is possible almost all alongside the sea ;)
• Old Town : The heart of Shetland Harbour is the Old Town, characterized by cobblestone streets, historic buildings, and a charming town square. Shetland Harbour's downtown area is a kinda picturesque pedestrian square, and quaint paths perfect for leisurely strolls …The Old Town includes the Town Hall, the Old Toad, the Talking Dog, a Fish and Chips, and even a Geek Store, all of them under the shadow of one of the oldest shop of the Island : the Elixirium ...
• Rolling Hills : Surrounding the town are rolling green hills covered in wildflowers and dotted with grazing sheep. These hills are perfect for hiking and offer panoramic views of the town and the bay. Beware of the fog !
• Forests and Woodlands : To the north of the town are more dense forests and woodlands with waterfalls upstream of the river which separates part of the island. These areas are home to various wildlife and provide a natural retreat for the residents. There are several well-maintained trails for hiking and exploring :)

Why do you focus on 5e? Obviously your content can be used in any other rpg that can accomdate a fantasy setting but it's very clear you don't like 5e all that much, considering the amount of patches you make to fix flaws in its design?
Friend, I think you've misunderstood me: I love 5th edition, I love it the way nerds love objectively kinda bad genre shows or middleaged men love broken down sportscars that remind them of their fathers. Love in this instance manifests as a desire to improve, to iterate, to imagine a less flawed version of the thing and through my efforts bring that version into being.
5e is flawed, but it's flawed in JUST the right way for my brain to start surging with ideas about how it could be better, which helps me learn to be a better game designer/modder as I test out how those ideas could be implemented or improved upon. There's a baseline level of stuff I like for d&d (how adaptable it is, how easy it is to onboard new players, the particular level of mechanical crunch) that the otherwise flawed system makes a great canvas to work with.
What you might've caught wind of is my vendetta against Wizards of the Coast and their Hasbro overseers; if I could I'd crash into their studio, plunder the IP from their vaults, and run off into the night making feral goblin noises. My ire particularly focuses on the fact that in trying to produce a market focused product that appeals to everyone they refuse to actually make anything of substance, leading to the marvel-ification of my favourite game.
5e is the system that feels the closest to the ideal game of d&d I've been chasing for two decades, and when something comes along that better fits that ideal you can bet I'll jump to that. I'm really excited about the OGL crisis spawned games (daggerheart, mcdmrpg, tales of the valiant) and I look forward to seeing what direction they take the TTRPG space. If I don't end up preferring any of them, I'll likely end up up using 5e as a roseta stone to translate good game design ideas between them.

Not Much Else [Pt.2]
Tumblr media
Ao3
Part 1 - Part 2 - Part 3 - Part 4 - Part 5 - Part 6
Pairing: Cooper Howard/The Ghoul x Fem!Reader
Word count: 2,233
Warnings: burning, cannibalism, canon typical violence, swearing, slight angst, unwanted touch (not from The Ghoul), (I’m bad at warning tags so just let me know if I need/should to add some)
Tags: Mild Proofreading, eventual smut (if I can get the balls to write it), reader had bat wings, Bounty Hunting, deviation from TV show, pre!show events(?), (Again I'm bad at tags so let me know)
Summary: You're a vault experiment that makes it to the surface. Quickly you learn the lay of the land and a few years later end up working the same bounty as The Ghoul. You convince him to let you take a long after having a feeling that you just had to follow him. Where will this story lead? Only time (and my motivation) will tell.
A/N: This is part 2 to the cringy ass shit I call a fanfic. Be forewarned that this is going to be incredibly inaccurate to cannon events and really unrealistic honestly. But listen. If Lucy can have her finger zapped back on and working properly anything can happen.

The pair of you had been traveling for two days by the time you caught wind of the target's whereabouts. After stopping at several towns to get supplies and information, you had been pointed east, away from the coast. He was trying to get over the mountains, or what remained of them, in order to get as far out of town as possible.
Once knowing this, The Ghoul and yourself continued on. Not much had been said in the two days of traveling together. You didn’t take The Ghoul for much of a talker so you kept your thoughts to yourself in hopes of not disturbing his peace. Most of your time was spent pondering over that feeling that continued to linger.
The familiarity from before continued to pluck at your thoughts the more you took in The Ghoul’s demeanor. Surely he couldn’t be someone from your past. There was no way someone could live over a hundred years, but maybe there was. With some of the other people and creatures you had encountered, maybe there was a possibility. This world was odd like that, and you had heard that The Ghoul was a lot older than most. So just maybe he was someone you truly recognize, however the wasteland changes people. Let alone someone who had been doing this for over a century.
So one night after you had settled at the ruins of a worn gas station and started to fix a meal, you decided to pry. It was a difficult situation. You couldn't be too blunt or he would quickly shut you down. However you couldn't tiptoe too much or he would get agitated and again shut you down.
Having managed to haggle some ingredients off someone at the market in the last town you were in, it could make for a good bargaining point with The Ghoul. Perhaps if you gave him a good meal he would loosen up a bet to talk. You had been contemplating the proper way to ask your questions the whole time you sat over the pot of stew. So when the food was done, you spooned out a bowl full of the stew for The Ghoul and waited a moment before to ask your questions.
“So, how long have you been wastelanding?” You started, making a bowl for yourself and blowing on it lightly to cool it off. The Ghoul was already a few bites in before dividing to take the chance of prying for information, and when you did he stopped momentarily to stare at you. His shoulders straightened as the bowl in his hands lowered to his lap.
“Why y’asking?” He asked bluntly as his expression stayed stone cold. The blood in your veins felt cooler than before as your gaze left his to reside on the bowl in your hands.
“I-” You didn’t want to lie, but you also didn’t want to scare him off. However, you could feel The Ghoul’s gaze burning into you as you searched for an answer. Against your better judgment, you decided to be upfront.
“I just have this feeling that I know you is all. Maybe that’s why I wanted to follow you in the first place.” Your eyes rose to meet The Ghoul’s once again only to find his expression to no longer be cold but instead a bit sorrowful. However that moment was brief as he asked you another question.
“What makes y’think that?” His voice was not as harsh as it usually was. It was as if he was trying to remember, just as you were, who you could’ve been to him in a past life. That sudden change in him sent a pinged of pain through your heart. You couldn’t help but feel a bit bad for making him recall the old life he once had.
“Your demeanor just reminds me of a man I once knew.” You said. Setting your bowl to the side, you remove the goggles from your eyes only now realizing they still lingered on your face even after the sun had fallen. Your gaze lingered on them for a while before you began to speak again.
“He was popular in western films back in the day and I had the pleasure of Co-starring in a few films with him. He was a good man which wasn’t too surprising.” You chuckled to yourself as you remember the time you had tripped over the bottom of the costume dress you were wearing on set. Cooper Howard had caught you mid fall and the two of you joked about it a bet after.
“It’s funny now that I think about it. If I placed you two side by side there wouldn't actually be much that y’all have in common. Maybe the cowboy physique but that's about it.” When you looked back up, The Ghoul’s gaze was trained on you. It was full of mixed emotions that were balancing sadness and anger. Guilt settled itself low in your chest as you realized perhaps you had gone too far. Picking your bowl up, you quickly raised it to your lips and started to drink some of it. Hoping to relieve some of the tension in the air.
“I’ve been doing this shit for over 100 years. The waste land changes people.” The Ghoul finally answered your question. His voice was still angry but the somber undertone didn't go unnoticed. As the two of you continued to sit in silence, the man sitting across from you, past the fire, spoke.
“I’ll take first watch.” The Ghoul grumbled as he finished his soup and went to spoon the last of the stew into his bowl. A worry he was going to leave in your sleep crossed your mind and as you began to voice your concern he spoke before you.
“I’m not gonna leave y’stranded. We have a lot of ground to cover tomorrow. So sleep.” The Ghoul growled the last bet which caught you off guard but definitely got the point across. You leaned against a rusted gas pump while pulling your wings over your arms and partially over your legs. It never took you long to fall asleep, but the guilt from hurting your traveling companion lingered. You wanted to make it right but reasoned you could mend things while traveling again tomorrow.
An abrupt crash caused you to wake up with a start, but before you could get your bearings, there was a heavy weight on you that hadn't been there before. It had you pinned to the ground as your senses came back to you and you realized it was a raider. The fire was still blazing which allowed you to see the man on top of you clearly. He was barking orders to his group which you weren’t coherent enough to make out.
“Get off me!” You shouted as you squirmed to fight against the man’s hold on you, the ground digging into your back. Your pulse pounding in your ears as panic washed over you. How had they gotten the jump on us? Your eyes frantically looked for The Ghoul only to see him lying face down in the sand. It was far too dark and you were in far too much of a panic to focus on if he was breathing or not.
“Aren’t you a pretty sight?” The raider leader said as he leaned down and ran his tongue up the side of your neck to your ear. At that moment instinct kicked in as you turned your head and bit down into the raider’s cheek when he was pulling away. Your teeth, having been abnormally sharp canines, beat through the flesh with ease and left a large hole in his face. The chunk of meat was left in your mouth as he jerked back in pain and held his face.
Taking that opportunity you got out from under the man but quickly yanked him up as you went to promptly throw him in the fire. His screams as he hit the flames alerted his group who quickly pulled out their weapons to attack. The fire was being smothered by the man writhing in it which put your opponents at a disadvantage. You spat out the flesh that remained in your mouth and beard your teeth, now stained with blood. Most of the raiders carried knives and close ranged weapons which only put them at an even greater disadvantage, as long as you stayed out of range.
You pulled out the pistol holstered at your thigh as you aimed and fired the first round. The bullet landed square in the chest of the raider closest to where The Ghoul laid motionless. As the body fell the other two charged in your direction which you quickly ducked away from and led them out from under the gas station canopy. They quickly followed suit as they chased after you. Not wanting to take a chance of them ripping your wings you stayed nimble on your feet.
Firing off another two rounds, one landed in the thigh of the farthest while the second lodged in the shoulder of the other. They continued to come after you which led to the last fatal two shots fired, but not before the one closest to you managed to swipe his blade across your forearm and leave a trail of blood running down your arm.
You quickly applied pressure to the wound as the bodies fell and you ran over to The Ghoul’s side. The man in the fire was no longer a threat and was burned bloody. Examining The Ghoul you realized he was still alive, but saw a bruise beginning to form on the back of his head. The raiders must’ve been hiding out and waiting.
What had The Ghoul so distracted he didn’t see them? You thought to yourself as you sat up. Rummaging through your bag you looked for your med kit to wrap your arm. It was going to be hard to bandage the arm with only one hand to work with but you would make do.
The Ghoul had been out for the rest of the night which worried you as you kept watch for him to recover. However, when morning arrived he came too and in a bet of a panic at that. His weapon was immediately in his hand as he waved it around looking for the raiders. You had already taken care of the bodies and harvested whatever meat you could manage off of them along with any supplies they could’ve had.
“What happened?” The Ghoul demanded as he leaned back on the wall behind him. You had flipped him over while he was sleeping so he wouldn't be lying face down in the dirt all night. His demeanor and frantic actions had startled you a bet so had your hands raised in defense.
“Raiders must’ve been camping out and ambushed us in the middle of the night. I took care of them.” You lowered your hands as he returned his gun to its holster and rubbed the back of his head. Slowly, you brought forward a makeshift bag filled with the remains of the raiders. You took it upon yourself to dry out the meat last night as you kept watch, not wanting to fall back asleep by accident. The Ghoul raised an eyebrow as his gaze moved from the bag, to you, then to your bandaged forearm.
“I figured if you don’t want it, someone in the next town will.” You explained as realization slipped into The Ghoul’s expression. Tossing it over to him, he looked in the bag to find what he was expecting.
“Well look at that. Looks like y’have more uses than y’let on.” His voice was teasing as he wrapped the meat backup and found a place for him to carry it. The Ghoul stood as he checked his belongings. Soon after, stretching to relieve the ache in his body from being shuffled around while unconscious.
“I got a lot of talents if you’re looking to test my limits.” You chuckled lightly as you stood up from your spot near the burnt out fire. Gathering your belongings, you quickly stretched your wings before tucking them back under your jacket. Your eye’s met with The Ghoul’s which caused you to startle as you saw the expression it held. It wasn’t something you had seen on him before, but it looked almost hungry as he smirked at you.
He began to walk closer to you leading to you stepping back into the gas pump you had been sleeping on. Your eyes rose to hold The Ghoul’s stair as he leaned forward to your ear. Worry settled into your veins as you wondered if he could hear the pounding in your heart against your rib cage.
“Maybe I should, darlin.” He whispered before turning away and beginning to trek into the wasteland. A deep red plagued your face as you tried to get your bearings. Why did he do that? Was he trying to rile you up? No he couldn’t have been. Could he?
“Come on now! Don’t make me wait on y’.” You heard The Ghoul shout over his shoulder as you realized he was already far ahead of you. Quickly gathering your composure, and throwing your goggles over your eyes, you ran after him to catch up.

BILLY DUNNE (lead singer, The Six): I don’t remember exactly when it happened, but at one point or another, things between Y/N and I changed. They started to pull away, to keep me at arm’s length, and that . . . that hurt more than I can put into words. For twelve years, we had been inseparable, then boom. Just like that, we were separated.
Don’t get me wrong. I was happy with Camila, happier than I had been in ages, but can one truly find joy without their best friend? No, I don’t think they can.
ੈ✩‧₊˚
Billy and Camila getting together served as a wake-up call. At some point in 1969, you had unknowingly developed feelings for him, had let him into your heart, but now that he was off the market, you felt the need to take a step back, to figure out who you were without your best friend. So you stopped going over to the Dunne household every day, instead opting to spend time with your father or your other friends. As expected, Billy took note of your absence, but when he pushed you for an explanation, you assured him all was well. The year before, he would have immediately noticed that your voice had cracked when offering assurance, revealing your words to be false. Now, though, he was distracted, his mind so wrapped up in other things that he did not notice. (Or so you thought . . .)
Despite the wide berth you were giving Billy, you still saw him at band practice. As per usual, the two of you played side by side, giving your all to the music, and while your musical talents continued to grow, something was off. A tension could be heard, one that neither of you were willing to acknowledge even after Chuck left . . .
His departure was completely unexpected, blindsiding not only you but the rest of the band, because he had been quiet in his discontent, not telling anyone he was going to leave until there was no other choice. He had to, because you had all rode up his stone-paved driveway in Warren’s rickety, beat-up van, expecting to practice, only to realize that the door to Chuck’s garage, your designated practice space, was closed.
“Ah, there he is,” Eddie breathed, kicking open the back door of the van, a half-smoked cigarette hanging from his lips. Out of the back spilled you, him, and Graham, your features all a mask of confusion.
“Hey, Chuck,” you greeted, offering him a wide, sunny smile. The kind that could calm even the most nerve-addled man, because he looked to be in need of assurance. “We‘ve been calling all morning. What’s up?”
There was no time for him to answer, though, before Warren and Billy emerged from the front of the van, the former suspiciously eyeing the closed garage door. “Why’s the garage door closed?”
A beat of tense silence trickled by, depriving the space around you of oxygen, then, “Look, I don’t know how to say this, so I’m just gonna say it. I got into college.”
Warren glanced at you, unable to suppress the soft, surprised chuckle that escaped his mouth. “Huh, all right.”
Your own mouth curved downward in response, showing that you had mixed emotions about the whole ordeal. On one hand, this was good news. Chuck had always been smart, the type that could go far with his brain so long as he applied himself. You could, too, but scholarly pursuits had never appealed to you, not the way music had. Four more years in a classroom personally sounded like torture to you, but if that was what Chuck wanted, then so be it. On the other hand, though, him going to college meant the band would be down both a bassist and a practice space.
“Bro, we didn’t even know you applied,” Graham pointed out, sparing a glance at the rest of the band. No one had a clue about Chuck applying to college until this very moment, because he had stayed silent, closed-lipped.
“Was this, like, before or after I spent all my money on this van?” Warren asked, his surprise bordering the line of disbelief.
“I know. I’m sorry, it’s just . . . they have a really good dental program.”
That was shocking, so much so that it was now your turn for disbelief. “You’re gonna be a dentist?”
“I don’t know. I guess so.”
“Chuck, come on,” Billy huffed, stepping closer to him in an effort to get through to him, to sway his decision. “Please don’t do this. All right? Not now. Not when things are just starting to happen.”
Chuck had thought long and hard about his decision, which was why he stayed firm, hard as stone. “What do you mean, ‘just starting to happen’?”
“Dude, we open for the Winters on Thursday, and that’s just the beginning.”
“This is a real opportunity.”
“So is this.”
“Billy,” Chuck released a deep, exasperated sigh, one that showed just how much he had thought this over. He would not be swayed, even when his closest friends begged him to. “I know this is your dream, man, but just because you want something to happen doesn’t mean it’s going to. Do you really think that there’s a future here?”
“Well, yeah. Chuck, I do.”
“You’re out of your fucking mind.”
With that, Chuck left, leaving a large, bassist-sized hole in the band. It came as a harsh, cutting surprise, but even so, you called after him, “Good luck.”
Your words, though light, did nothing to dispel the tension that had fallen over the group. Eddie seemed to be feeling it most of all, as shown by how he pulled the cigarette from his mouth, turning it over and over in his hands. “We gotta cancel the gig.”
“No, man,” Billy shook his head, refusing to be put out by this one setback. He would not be stymied, not when the band had just gotten started on its rise to greatness. “We’re not canceling.”
“Yeah? What’re we gonna do? We don’t have a bassist, Billy—“
“We’re not canceling,” he repeated, remaining firm, unyielding. Emerald eyes slowly strayed to Eddie, clearing with comprehension, then, “Eddie, you switch over to bass.”
“No.”
You could not help but roll your eyes at the suggestion, because even though Eddie was a team player, there was no way he would switch over without kicking up a storm. He would no doubt complain, spending precious time complaining rather than practicing. That was why you straightened your spine, volunteering, “I’ll do it.”
“Thanks, Y/N. We owe you one.” A pleased grin slid onto Billy’s face, replacing the discontent that had been there moments before. He placed a hand on your shoulder, pressing his gratefulness into your skin in a manner that could have been taken as friendly . . . if only his hand had not lingered a moment longer than it should have.
ੈ✩‧₊˚
GRAHAM DUNNE (lead guitar, the Six): (Smiles) Y/N ended up becoming a better bassist than Chuck, anyway.
─── ✧・゚: *✧・゚:* ───
ROD REYES (tour manager): Oh, yeah. I remember the night the Dunne Brothers opened for the Winters, specifically Billy Dunne and Y/N L/N. One look, and I could tell they were rock stars. He was cocksure, knew who to play in the crowd. They had this air about them, the kind that entranced the crowd, really brought out their emotions.
There’s just a quality that some people have. If you took nine guys, plus Mick Jagger, and you put them in a lineup, someone who had never heard of the Rolling Stones before could still point to Jagger and say, “That’s the rock star.” Billy and Y/N had that. And the bad had good sound.
ੈ✩‧₊˚
“Obviously, you got to write your own material,” the famed manager, Rod Reyes, declared, the distinct smells of smoke and sex emanating from him, filling the air. The smell was so strong and potent that it filled your nostrils from your spot beside Graham, burning your throat, but you were happy, too optimistic to mind the burn.
“Well, I-I mean, I do. We do,” Billy replied, his emerald eyes flitting briefly from Rod’s to yours, because the two of you had written the band’s songs together. A multitude of hours had trickled by in which you two had tried to piece together worthwhile ballads, throwing paint at a theoretical wall and seeing what stuck. The first drafts of the songs had been horrid, lacking any harmony or smoothness, but with much shaping, they had been turned into songs that could go a long way. Key word: could. “Most of it’s not good enough yet.”
“What are you writing about?”
“I have this one song called ‘Nevermore’ about the Catonsville Nine.”
“No. Oh! Are you Bob Dylan? Are you Buffy Sainte-Marie? Enough with the political shit. It’s a new decade. No one needs reminding that the world is a mess. People want to feel good again. They want to feel hope. You can write a love song, can’t you?” Rod demanded, a sour look crossing his face at the thought of ‘Nevermore.’ The song had not been bad, sounding pleasant to the ear, but he did not need to hear it to know that it would not go over well with the masses. He turned to Graham, then, “You need to cool it with the solos, brother. Nobody cares about your technical guitar skills. They want to sing. They want to dance. Look, the last thing I’ll say, and this is key, you need to get the fuck out of Pittsburgh. You want to be signed to a label, you want to work with Jimmy Miller, Tom Dowd, Teddy Price—“
The mention of Teddy Price caused a great, perceptible shift in the air. You immediately sat upright, a curious glint working its way into your eyes. “Wait, you know Teddy Price?”
“Yeah, I know everybody, and they’re all in L.A. now. Not London, not New York. California, my friends. That is the place you got to be.”
His words resonated deeply with you three, specifically the brothers, which was why the prospect of going to L.A. was promptly proposed to the rest of the band. As expected, they agreed, and the six of you and Camila set off, riding off in Warren’s van, Lady Peaches, toward your futures.
ੈ✩‧₊˚
Y/N L/N (singer, The Six): I knew the chances of making it big were slim, but I also knew that if I didn’t at least try, I would never forgive myself. The boys wouldn’t either. So I packed up my things and bid Dad farewell. He was sad to see me go, but just as happy that I was going after my dreams.
He didn’t tell me he was sick . . . Probably because he knew I’d have stayed behind to take care of him.
─── ✧・゚: *✧・゚:* ───
The City of Angels welcomed you and the Dunne Brothers with open arms, taking you in as one of its own. You got into contact with Rod, hoping that he would set you up with the big guys, specifically Teddy Price, but all he had to offer was a gig at a dank, seedy bar named Filthy McNastys. Its attendants were sketchy, having all sorts of sins to their name, but given that the bar was on the Strip, the band gladly pushed through, giving their all to each and every performance.
ੈ✩‧₊˚
Y/N: The months we spent at McNastys were slow. At first, barely anyone came to see us, but the more shows we played, the more attention we got. People started coming in just to see us, which was fantastic, but there was a problem: we were barely getting paid.
I ended up getting a job as a waiter at this cute little coffee house to help make ends meet, but no matter what we did, it just didn’t seem like it’d be enough.
ੈ✩‧₊˚
“What happened with that producer you went up to?” Eddie asked as you slid into the booth aside him, donning your work uniform. Working at a coffee house was not exactly what you had envisioned yourself doing when you had set off for L.A., but hey, sacrifices had to be made if the group was to stay. “The one with the parrot?”
“Parrot guy passed on us,” Camila answered, having fashioned herself the band’s manager. You thought she was doing a great job, given that she had never done such a thing before. Others did not think as such, though, as shown by Eddie’s next comment.
“Wow. That is bleak.”
“Might want to save half that toast for tomorrow, Eddie,” she retorted, eyeing his toast with an expression of deadly seriousness. Atop the table lay a mound of cash, which was all of the money that the band had amassed since the start of the month. “This is barely enough to cover the rent.”
“Fuck,” Eddie cursed, breathing out a deep sigh. Half his toast was promptly placed in his shirt pocket, being tucked away to be eaten tomorrow.
“Fuck,” you echoed, resting your head atop his shoulder, the move a sign of just how deeply tiredness had settled upon your bones, weighing you down. “I’ll be working another double this weekend, I s’pose.”
Eddie opened his arms in response, letting you lean more closely against him. You did so happily, soaking in his warmth. The action, though gentle, was purely friendly, yet still, unbeknownst to you, two sets of eyes looked upon said action disapprovingly. Both Billy and Graham, despite not wanting to admit it, were jealous, because there you were, snuggling up against another man.
Their jealousy went unnoticed, but your exhaustion did not, as shown by the concern that made its way across Warren’s face. “Fuck it. Maybe old Chuckie was right, huh? Maybe this was all just a big mistake and we should have just stayed at home with our parents, saved money on rent, and become dentists.”
“I mean, I’ve sent out hundreds of photographs. Not a single fucking paper has responded. Should I just quit? No one said it was gonna be easy.”
Camila’s disheartened words drew your attention, causing your head to snap up toward hers. “No, don’t quit. All it takes is one person to make a difference,” you replied, flashing her a weak but warm smile, because even though you had distanced yourself from Billy, you had welcomed her into the group as kindly as you had the new keyboardist, Karen Sirko.
“Also, while we’re talking about stuff, how come I’m the only one without a bed in the house?” Warren deadpanned, heavily yearning for a good night’s sleep in a proper bed. He had been squatting on the couch, after all, and it could be felt in the aches of his back. No twenty year old should feel like they had the back of an old, decrepit man . . .
“Well, you could’ve taken Karen’s room,” Billy pointed out, finally breaking out of his jealous haze.
“No, I couldn’t have. That room is haunted.”
“It’s not haunted.”
“Everybody knows it’s haunted.”
“Oh, come on, Rojas. You don’t want to get all up close and personal with a ghost?” you teased, reaching across Eddie to jostle his arm. Of course, Warren jostled you back, the two of you nearly displacing Eddie’s toast, which he did not like. Not at all.
“Hey, stop! You almost made me drop my pocket toast—“
Sensing that the three of you were on the brink of causing chaos, Karen broke her silence, asking a question that had been bothering her for a long time, “Why are we still called The Dunne Brothers? I mean, four of us aren’t Dunnes, and the last time I checked, I’m nobody’s brother.”
“So you want to change our name?” Billy asked, not even wanting to consider the idea. Truth be told, you had been opposed to the name at the nascence of the band, but given that two of the three original members were Dunnes, your opinion had been the minority.
“I personally think that’s a great idea,” Eddie admitted, earning a sharp, accusatory look from Billy. Said look was sharp enough to cut skin, but he did not wilt, instead adding, “I’m just saying what everybody’s thinking.”
“Well, the name is the name, so . . . That’s how people know us.”
“Yeah, but it’s not exactly doing much for us, though.”
“How about Immaculate Reception?” Warren interjected, causing your nose to crinkle disapprovingly.
“God, no. That’s horrid.”
“We’re not changing the name,” Billy insisted, looking to his brother for help. Graham offered none, though, for he was open to changing the name.
“I mean, listen, if we’re throwing stuff out there, Hercules is still on the table.”
“No! No way!”
“Deliverance, Espionage, Poison.”
“How about Aurora—“
“The six of us will never agree on a name,” Billy cut you off, only liking a single one of the names that had been thrown out. “All right? So let’s just . . .”
His words caused a lightbulb to go off in Karen’s head, as shown by how brightly she grinned, realization donning on her features. “What about The Six?”
“I like The Six.”
“Sure as hell better than Hercules.”
“Y/N?” Graham looked at you, an expectant, questioning look flitting across his face. He had been looking at you more and more as of late with that look, one you could not quite make sense of. “What do you think?”
You opened your mouth to answer, to offer your view of the name, only for the words to die on your tongue when your boss, Dave, yelled out, “Y/N, break’s over. Back on the floor!”
ੈ✩‧₊˚
Y/N: I put in crazy hours at the coffee house, working to the point of exhaustion, but one of my coworkers there, this bright, fiery girl named Daisy Jones, turned what was one of the darkest times of my life into one of the brightest. One day, after working a double together, she pulled me along to watch her and her friend, Simone, perform at the Troubadour.
I thought that was all it was, that I was just going to support them, but then, after Daisy performed, she got this crazy glint in her eye. The kind where you know she’s up to something. She set down her guitar and said, “Now, I’d like to bring a friend of mine up on stage. Come on up and wow us, Y/N L/N.”
I was shocked, to say the least, but Daisy Jones isn’t the type of person you deny, especially in a room with that many people. So I got up on that stage, took Daisy’s guitar, and sang a piece I had been writing on my own called “Equilibrium.” It was about trying to find a balance between who I was with Billy versus without him.
Looking back, it was sad just how deeply intertwined I was with him, even when there was more space between us than ever. At the time, though, I didn’t realize the song was about him.
Hell, I didn’t even realize Teddy Price was in the audience that night. In my defense, though, my obliviousness might’ve been from all the mescaline I was taking at the time . . .
ੈ✩‧₊˚
After your performance, you returned the guitar to Daisy and hopped off the stage, your cheeks bathed in perspiration from exertion. As soon as your feet made contact with the earth, you were off, making a beeline for the star of the night, Simone.
A golden grin immediately slid onto your mouth, showing how happy you were for her in that moment. “Simone, you did great out there.”
“Hey,” she returned the smile, inclining her head to the man she had been chatting with before you had approached. “Y/N L/N, Teddy Price. You two should talk.”
Oh, my God, you thought when his name trickled your ears. It was all you could think, because there was one of the legends of the music industry, handing you his card. Feeling as though you were floating outside of your body, you reached out to take the card into your hands, hoping that he did not notice the slight tremble of your fingers.
“You interested, kid? We could work on some music together.”
“Oh, um, I appreciate it, but I’m not a solo act,” you informed, because at the time, you had only ever performed by yourself on a handful of occasions. They had been fine, perhaps even good, but not as great as when you performed with the band. “I’m in a band, The Six. Any chance you’d be interested in giving us a chance? Just let us play one song for you, that’s all I ask.”
He looked upon you, studying you keenly. A beat passed, then he nodded, agreeing to give The Six a chance. “Okay, kid. I’ll give you a chance. Are you ready?”
“Undoubtedly, yes.”
ੈ✩‧₊˚
BILLY: People think we played one song for Teddy Price and he gave us a record deal. Not true. After that first meeting, he put us through the wringer for months, but it was worth it.
Everything had gone so slowly, and then suddenly it was all happening so fast. We recorded our album in six days, had two weeks off, then it was time to hit the road.
─── ✧・゚: *✧・゚:* ───
BILLY: The night before we were set to leave, Camila told me she was seven weeks pregnant, and I . . . I decided we needed to get married right away. We had been planning to have a wedding sometime after the tour but I decided we needed to do it right then. I don’t know why that mattered to me, but the moment I knew she was pregnant I felt like we had to make sure we were a proper family.
CAMILA DUNNE (wife of Billy Dunne): Karen knew an ordained minister. She got his number from a friend of hers and we called him late that night. He came right over.
EDDIE ROUNDTREE (rhythm guitarist, The Six): It was four in the morning.
CAMILA: Karen decorated the porch out back, and Y/N picked some roses from the bushes surrounding the house. They made me this beautiful flower crown and did my hair; it made me feel like a proper bride.
─── ✧・゚: *✧・゚:* ───
INTERVIEWER: What do you remember about the tour?
Y/N: More than I’d like to.
GRAHAM: . . .
WARREN ROJAS (drummer, The Six): . . .
KAREN SIRKO (keyboardist, The Six): . . .
BILLY: I, uh . . . It was a long time ago, I don’t remember much.
CAMILA: I remember everything.
GRAHAM: Pretty quickly, we found a rhythm: get to town, sound check, play, party, get on the bus. And the better we started playing, the more we partied. Hotels, girls, drugs. Over and over. Hotels, drugs, girls. For all of us, but especially Billy.
WARREN: Let me sum it up for you: I was getting laid, Graham was getting high, Eddie was getting drunk, Karen and Y/N were getting fed up, and Billy was all four, at once.
Y/N: Billy changed on that first tour. Cracked under the pressure, I think. He turned into a person I didn’t recognize and didn’t like.
And even though I didn’t like him, I still loved him.
ੈ✩‧₊˚
After the wedding, something within Billy had changed, had shifted. He became hard, closed off. You and Graham, two of the people closest to him, were kept at arm’s length, having no choice but to helplessly watch on as he ruined all that was good in his life. He got drunk, high, and angry, and when his anger mounted to an exceedingly high level, he expelled it by sleeping with a nameless woman, one he could use, then discard when he felt better.
Him spiraling hurt you more than you cared to admit, but you were not his family. Not his spouse nor his blood, so it was not your place to set him straight . . . or you thought as such until he tried to rope you into his debauchery.
ੈ✩‧₊˚
Y/N: After the Ottawa show, I went back to my hotel room and started getting ready to go out for the night. I remember, I was just about to get started on my hair when there came a knock at the door. I opened it, expecting to see Graham, but it was Billy. He had been drinking tequila. I could smell it on his breath, and the look in his eye . . . I had never seen him that down, and it made me sad.
I didn’t know what to say, but I let him in. He went and sat down on the bed, and knowing I’d need a drink to get through whatever was to come, I poured myself a glass of whiskey. It was awful, but did its job. I downed the whole thing, then poured two more. One for me, and one for Billy.
BILLY: I honestly don’t know what got into me that night. I just needed to see Y/N, to hold them.
Y/N: He asked me to hold him, so I did. We sat there for a while, not talking, moving, or doing anything. Just holding each other . . . until he tried to kiss me. That pissed me off, because he knew how I felt about him. He had known when he married Camila, yet still, he had married her. Had chosen her.
I jumped up and yelled, “What the fuck do you think you’re doing, Billy? I mean, honestly, is this the kind of person you want to be?”
And he said, “The booze, the drugs, the girls . . . I’ve been doing them all to try to get you out of my system—“
I slapped him. Hard.
BILLY: Y/N slapped me, and I just kind of sat there, reeling. They looked like they wanted to apologize, but before they could, Graham walked in. You could just tell by the look on his face that he had overheard the whole thing.
GRAHAM: I only heard a tiny bit, but it wasn’t hard to piece together what was happening. It also wasn’t hard to piece together that Y/N wasn’t willing to entertain Billy’s advances, so I pushed him out of the room and into the parking lot. Outside, he paced back and forth and muttered to himself, looking a little crazy. He said, “I fucked it all up. I fucked it all up.”
Deep down, I’d known it was coming, because he loved Y/N the same way I did. So all I could say was, “Just don’t do it again, man. Just don’t do it again.”
ROD: Billy started going at it double time after Ottawa. The coke and girls and booze and all that.
GRAHAM: Camila decided to surprise Billy a few weeks after that. She drove up, five months pregnant, and found him in a . . . compromising position.
EDDIE: She walked in on him getting, well . . . I don’t know how else to say it . . . oral sex, I guess I should say. From a groupie.
Y/N: Camila blew up on Billy. Like, slapped right across the face. Hit him with her bag, too, if memory serves. She asked me to watch him, to make sure he didn’t sink deeper into himself.
And she said, “When he wakes up, give him this letter.” The letter had an ultimatum; he had to get clean before the baby came.
KAREN: He didn’t stop messing around with all of it.
EDDIE: We were all sort of counting down the days. You know, sixty days until Billy has to get clean. Then it was forty days. Then, when it got down to ten days, he was forgetting the words onstage, and I thought he was never gonna clean up.
Y/N: On November 28th, we were in Hartford for a show when one of the stage managers called me offstage. Said there was a call for me. I picked it up, and it was Teddy. “You gotta get Billy home,” he said, because Camila had gone into labor.
BILLY: Y/N took me by the arm and held onto me until we got onto the plane. Then, we landed and they dragged me into this beat-up rental car and drove me to the hospital.
ੈ✩‧₊˚
The rickety old rental car sped into the hospital parking lot, going way faster than the legal speed in an effort to get Billy to his girls as fast as possible. When the car rolled to a stop, though, he did not immediately jump to get out. Confusion overtook your features, prompting you to say, “Well? Go see your girls.”
“I can’t,” he whispered, his voice sad, broken down. Never before had you seen him so shattered.
“You can.”
“I can’t.”
“Billy.”
“Y/N. I can’t have her meet me like this.”
An emotion akin to the anger you had felt back in Ottawa arose beneath your skin, causing you to tighten your hold on the steering wheel, your knuckles flashing white with force. “Okay, then,” you said, eerily calm. “I’m going to be there for Camila and to meet that baby girl, with or without you, Billy. But if I go by myself, you’re going to get help when I come back out. Real help.”
ੈ✩‧₊˚
Y/N: That night, sitting by Camila’s bedside was when I let go of the possibility of Billy. He had a wife and a baby, and if he was going to mess that up, I wasn’t going to play a part in it.

tw for violence & character death
Zay takes us to the fountains my third summer. They are bright with enthusiasm and I watch Seb watching them, I watch his smile twitch wider with the sound of laughter, with their quick words I can’t quite understand yet. He translates in my ear, one hand against my ribs, like I might slip away. Seb always seems worried about that. Where would I go? I hold the mist in my cupped hands and watch the droplets form in slow, iridescent beads.
It’s the nobles, Zay tells us. Their plumbing is made from mother of pearl, which makes the water shine. I believe her until Seb laughs, loud and long, and calls them a name I don’t know. Trickster, he tells me later, when I ask. Traitor, but he doesn’t mean it. Not about Zay.
Because Zay takes us to the fountains and to the markets and whispers the secrets of the city in my ear with his breath hot against my cheek, quick and disarming, and I am learning. I am learning that some of the roads uptown disappear only to reappear weeks later. That in the Quaire district, some of the plants fight back. Full moons mean tragedy down by the coast if you’re not careful. Never follow the brightly coloured birds, even if they know your name. Especially if they know your name. Zay is the key, Seb says, the key to survival; our key; ours.
-
Autumn brings fruit. The fruits of our labours—a home, a bed, a smile that repeats—and branches laden heavy in the Olacon courtyard, plums fat and heavy and leaking brilliant lapis juice onto paving stones. Bat is driven indoors, annoyed by blue dye or by our laughter, and we wander the lush garden, and it’s a marvel. Does Zay know it’s a marvel? I ask Seb, and he tells me to ask them myself, so I do. It’s home, he says, and then with a grin that’s maybe not for me to see, adds on, yours too.
And it is. Johadee looks into my eyes, and she knows we’re an infestation, we’re everything they say we are, every nasty word thrown our way in Ivlen when I couldn’t speak the language and they knew, they all knew. Parasite. Leech. Johadee knows, and she touches my cheek and brushes Seb’s hair back and asks what part of Ilylon we are from, and whether we are more comfortable with one bed or two.
In the garden, the plums are so ripe that Seb’s fingers dig into them and juice spatters everywhere—on his hands, dripping down his wrist, across his wide grin. He laughs and when I kiss him, I taste plum. I lick the juice off his hands, one finger at a time. Zay watches us and pretends she isn’t.
-
The winter in Archallow is survivable. More survivable in the Olacan house than the shelter in the forest, though when Seb asks, I will always tell him no. We pile in front of the fire, all three of us, a tangle, and it feels as though maybe this is why. Because that is the question and will always be the question. How is useless. But why? Why me? Why here? Why did I meet Seb, and why is his time different than mine?
It’s better here, he tells me. Here, he can be Seb. Here, people like Zay are free. People like all three of us. We can all be free, he tells me, and his eyes are earnest, his face upturned. His eyes are a weapon.
He’s been getting into trouble recently. Seb is bolder than I am, more comfortable than I am, but he’s strange, and sometimes people know. Sometimes they tell him so. Sometimes with words, other times with a fist. He’ll fight back, and come home bruised so Nerithara will fuss over him and heal him, slowly and methodically. Zay watches and their fingers tremble.
When the firelight crackles and Seb sleeps deeply, they tell me about their worries. She’s worried about Seb. I’m worried about him too. I twine my fingers with theirs, and I whisper his name over again, quiet, and maybe Seb is right, it feels like a key. Zay. Zay. Zay.
We can all be free.
-
The markets are loud, always, but especially in the spring. When the boats come from Lapaloa, and the fruit is bright and glittering like crystals, the markets are a throng. Easy to hide, Seb says, and rolls his eyes when Zay reminds him that means it’s easier for the predators, too.
I don’t like the noise. I stay back when Seb goes for cinnamon sticks for Bat, and Zay stays with me. As company? As consolation? As a guard? I do not know, but I am relieved, because I want to talk to her. I want to tell them that I see it. The way he watches. Zay watches me the way I watch Seb, and they watch Seb the way I watch them. It could be so easy, I start to say, and then Seb shouts.
We whirl.
He is arguing with somebody, his face is toward us, he is startled, and I know it will be bad before it is. Zay—
Their fingers are a vice on my shoulder, expression a warning. Not you. And he’s right, and I know it, and I watch the first blow in mute disbelief. It’s a stone, I think, it must be, Seb goes down so fast it can’t have been anything else.
The sound—a shriek, raspy with horror—tears out of me before I can stop it and is lost to the crowds.
And Zay is gone. She’s running to Seb, elbowing past people, calling his name. Nobody moves out of their way. Nobody lets him get past, and I can’t move. I’m stuck where I am—ZAY’S MAGIC—and I can only watch.
I am glad I do not see.
I would not carry that burden for all the living world could offer me.
When they return, Zay’s eyes are as hard as marbles and twice as glassy, and there is blood spattered on his fingers.
Seb’s eyes never close.

The air is crisp and clean, sea salt and the scent of weathered wood surrounding him like a familiar blanket. It's different here on the coast, back on land, compared to out on the water. The ocean spray isn’t a constant bombardment against his face and the deafening crash and roar of the waves, the creaking and groaning of the ship, and the shouting and jaunts of the crew have finally gone silent.
Instead, there's the pleasant chatter of the townsfolk as they go about their morning business. Haggling in the market, pleasantries exchanged in passing, and laughter from old friends as they discuss the day ahead and the week passed. Suigetsu can't help but grin as he strolls down the main road of the market district, enjoying the feeling of steady stone ground underfoot. It's been four months since the crew had last made port and he'd nearly forgotten what it felt like to not be rocked back and forth and nearly thrown off his feet by rough waters. He spots a few other crew around as he explores, but they all either pay him no mind or send him a less than pleasant look.
The energy on the ship had been… tense, the past two weeks. Hurried, hush discussions in the crew quarters-
(Occasionally followed by a dirty look and a door closed in his face when he happened to pass by, the voices growing even more hushed as he tried to linger and eavesdrop - What were they saying? What was going on?)
- and a cold shoulder or twelve out on the deck. Suigetsu was the youngest of the crew by several years, but this certainly wasn't some sort of ageist exclusion. They were up to something , and the growing, nagging feeling had left him with restless sleep and far too many wary glances over his shoulder.
And, with the captain staying confined to his cabin the past five days, due to a growing ailment, he knew that everything would be coming to a head sooner rather than later.

Question, can you imagine well what these look like from these descriptions from the upcoming chapter:
Vermillion Court The Vermillion Court turns out to be a massive edifice of red brick, fawn marble and sandstone nestled into swooping hills south of the forest. Curved buildings lined with columns and pilasters, narrow arched niches and windows and blinds enclose two main courtyards full of trees, flowers and artful topiaries.
Alerhon flies a wide curve around the largest dome towering over the courtyard on the far end of the structure, and you spot a few smaller dragons lounging abut in the lantern, watching the older dragon fly by with interest.
A few heavy beats of his wings and Alerhon lands in the middle of the paths, just by a fountain decorated with dozens of small, bipedal figures gathered around a sleeping dragon.
Jade Grove Hidden amongst the towering, dense trees lies a small clearing with an unlit bonfire place in the middle, a dozen lines of stepping stones spiraling from the clearing's edge towards the middle. A few dragons of various sizes are gathered around the pit, chatting. They raise their heads as Alerhon flies overhead, one of them hurrying away past the tree line.
As soon as Alerhon hovers over the place for a moment the smell of thousands of flowers and burning herbs hits your nostrils, and you shakes yourself, before looking around just as the old dragon lands.
Beyond the clearing the shadows among the trees seem unusually dark, with an odd, but serene silver tint to them. But the moment Alerhon lands dozens of small, wisp-like lights of silver and gold and light green flicker on between the trees, dimly illuminating a path deeper into the forest.
Midnight Rookery The forest passes by below, shifting into now snow-covered meadows and the foothills of the ragged Hornridge. A biting wind hits you as Alerhon maneuvers through narrow gaps and underneath stone arches. It takes you a moment to realize the last few of these arches weren't natural formations, but carved bridges, spanning the deep valleys below.
You look closer at the next such bridge, spying the carvings on its side and the massive chains anchoring it to the mountains. There's openings and balconies carved into the mountainside, dragons bustling about on them and high above.
Then a sudden warmth hits you, and before you the main body of the Rookery rises in the middle of a sea of lava. Sturdy, obsidian towers glisten in the dim light from below, chains the size of Alerhon's neck spanning between them alongside railing-less bridges.
Alerhon flies a wide circle around the main building before landing on the largest balcony it sports.
Cerulean Halls Below you the icy waters and snow-covered plains of the north take on a crystalline appearance as a massive building comes into view, looking as if it's carved from ice.
You need to look twice to realize that it's crystal and marble, curving and spiraling into a surreal structure of filigree towers and arches, column-lines galleries and swooping stairways.
And you need to look a third time to spot the floating stepping stones bridging between buildings, and glowing crystals hovering about the passages, illuminating the place in a soft purple and silver light.
Alerhon harrumphs mildly and hovers in midair for a moment, looking around, before frowning and ducking under an arch and a few flying buttresses and circling around one of the towers. You'd swear that tower wasn't there when you were on the other side of the arch.
With another frown Alerhon lands at the bottom of the stairs leading to what has to be the main entrance, shaking himself and tapping the ground a bit as if to make sure it's actually there.
Sandstorm Markets Alerhon soars over the forest towards the western coast, circling above a sizable harbor town for a moment before diving down into an intricately carved archway standing along on a nearby hill.
There's a flash of light and a sudden gust of warm wind hits your face. You blink and open your eyes to a glittering golden sands of a desert.
Alerhon beats his wings, flying a curve and you see a massive palace rise amongst the dunes. Spiraling towers with wide platforms on top rise high above flat-roofed quarters and beehive like buildings, intricately painted footbridges spanning over shallow ponds full of fish and waterlilies.
Palmtrees sway in the soft wind and various dragons are dozing in the shadows of colorful canopies on large plazas and in small gardens.
For a moment Alerhon circles one of the lesser decorated courtyards, before landing, kicking up dust.

On July 6th 1249 King Alexander II died on the island of Kerrera.
The kings of Scots of the old Celtic line were plagued in the thirteenth century by a persistent inability to breed male heirs. William the Lion, whose reign lasted fifty years till his death in 1214, was well into his middle fifties when his son and heir, the future Alexander II, at last arrived. Alexander was sixteen when he took his place on the hallowed coronation stone at Scone.
Alexander was at once threatened by his relatives, the MacWilliams, descended from King Duncan II, who had been murdered in 1094. They believed they had a better right to the throne than the incumbents, had already made attempts to attain it, and had no shortage of male heirs. Now, in 1215, Donald Bane, a great-grandson of King Duncan, rose in the north, but he and his supporters were quelled by a powerful Celtic lord, Farquhar MacTaggart, who sent Alexander the severed heads of the rebels as a present. Alexander was less Norman-oriented and more Celtic in his sympathies than his father and this support from a Celtic lord was significant.
It was a brutal age and in the 1220s Alexander would have the hands and feet of eighty men of Caithness cut off to punish them for roasting their bishop alive, while another challenge from the MacWilliams in 1230 would end with the brains of the challenger’s baby daughter being beaten out against the market cross in Forfar.
Alexander meanwhile had no baby of his own. He had married Joan, the eldest sister of Henry III of England, but the years went by and there were no children. The nearest male heir was Alexander’s cousin, John, Earl of Huntingdon, but he died in 1237, childless. The English kings had already laid claim to being Scotland’s suzerains and the situation was so threatening that, apparently, it was decided that if Alexander died without a son, his successor would be Robert Bruce, lord of Annandale, as the nearest male in line. Or so the Bruces were to claim.
When Queen Joan died in 1238 on a visit to England, Alexander took the opportunity to marry again. He chose a French lord’s daughter, Marie de Coucy, and in 1241, to what must have been the huge relief of them both, she presented him with an heir, the future Alexander III, who was to be their one and only child. The king, who had extended his effective sway to both Galloway and Argyll, with assistance from Farquhar MacTaggart, now set out to buy the Western Isles from their ruler, Haakon IV of Norway. The offer was not accepted and in 1249 Alexander gathered an invasion fleet. He had got as far as the island of Kerrera, across the water from Oban, when he fell sick of a fever and died.
The heir, Alexander III, was a boy of seven, and was ten when he was married to Henry III’s eleven- year-old daughter, Margaret. He grew up to be one of the best kings of his line, but all his children died in his own lifetime and when he himself was killed in a riding accident in 1286 his successor was his baby granddaughter, known as the Maid of Norway. She died only four years later and the way was wide open for the ruthless Edward I of England to intervene, claiming to be Scotland’s overlord, and to sort out the succession. The intervention was unsuccessful in the end, but it led to centuries of intermittent war, and Scots in later times looked back to the reigns of Alexander II and Alexander III as a golden age.
Alexander II has the honour of being the only Scottish king to take his invasion force all the way to the south coast of England.
Whilst still a teenager, Alexander backed a rebellion of northern English barons against the King of England, John I. Hoping to secure the territories of Northumberland, Alexander and his army invaded England. They reached the port of Dover where, while waiting to join a French invasion force, the invasion failed. The death of John I saw the English barons change their allegiances. Alexander left empty-handed.

[Mermaid!Sakura AU - #1]
Tumblr media
Sasuke looks at the sand flowing between his toes. His eyes sting from the lack of sleep. It’s one of those mornings, where he’d rather stay awake than see another nightmare.
After his family died during the war, he enrolled as a soldier as soon as he legally could, thinking he had nothing to lose anymore. Several years later the war ended and, against all odds and his own wishes, he made it out of it alive. Physically alive, at least.
Now at twenty he already lives the life of an old man, recluse in a small fishermen village by the coast, far away from the crowds and the hustle and bustle that remind him too much of the battlefield, too broken to enjoy his young years, and staring at the sea for days in a silent hope that it will one day bring him peace.
He takes small jobs during the season as a help for fishermen and vendors on the port market. During winter he is a handyman for lumberjacks and carpenters and whoever needs him and can keep him busy. When his mind is restless at night, he takes long walks on the shore under the moonlight until the first lights of the morning tell him it's time to go home.
When he looks up from his feet, something catches his eye on the beach. At first he thinks it's just the white morning sun reflecting on the sand but there really is something washed up on the beach. His heart tightens thinking it's probably a dolphin that died during the night.
He walks faster towards it but suddenly slows down. It's clearly not a dolphin. His stomach turns. It's a woman, lying on the sand on her side, unconscious. Her skin is white and pearly like the inside of a seashell.
When he comes closer he realizes she is naked but her pink hair is so long and thick that it wraps around her shoulders, and covers part of her chest and hips, sticking to her skin like dried algae. She looks like a marble statue.
Suddenly the idea that such a beautiful and delicate being died makes him immensely sad. He looks around. No one is up and out at this hour yet. He squats next to her to see her better. A barely perceptible movement of her shoulder makes him freeze.
She is breathing. She's breathing! He touches her arm and his hand hesitates. Her skin is cold like the sea and she doesn’t react at all to his touch. He checks again but it's no mistake, her rib cage is moving as she breathes and he could swear he saw her eyelids move.
He needs to bring her to safety before the tide rises again. Very carefully, he wraps his cloak around her and picks her up. She feels so fragile in his arms, collapsed against his chest like a porcelain doll. He is relieved not to meet anyone on his way home. It's so early that he can only hear faraway noises of the street market just barely waking up.
He gently lays her on his couch, her head resting on a cushion and her body still covered with his cloak, and calls the doctor. Unsurprisingly, no one answers at this time of the morning. The only doctor in the village is past retirement age and has a tendency to spend the night drinking and gambling. He might not be able to have someone come over to see his new guest in a few hours.
Just when he's hanging up, he sees her move, and rushes to be at her side. He watches her as she blinks slowly and gives him an unfocused, groggy look through heavy eyelids. She has the brightest, greenest eyes he has ever seen. Salt crystals hang onto her pale pink lashes, like minuscule diamants framing the jade stones of her irises.
He is speechless.

Every Dredge Aberration (2024), Part 6
Tumblr media
Decaying Blackmouth
Encyclopedia #136
Aberrant form of blackmouth salmon
Description:
A shimmering blackness permeates the flesh of this relentless fish. Muscles atrophied and decaying, but still it swims on.
Tumblr media
Comment: I does me no pleasure to admit that this species was a particularly underwhelming discovery. Were this found in freshwater, literally nothing would even be amiss. Elaboration on that bit.
How to catch: Can be netted, but is also fairly easy to find with a little prodding about the Gale coasts. Expect to find them during the day.
Sprouting Eel
Encyclopedia #137
Aberrant form of cougar eel
Description:
An eruption of crystalline growths burst from its skin. Sharp shapes clatter and resonate together.
Tumblr media
Comment: Now this creature... this is a true beauty of the Deep. Likely suffering, anomalous, but undoubtedly beautiful. It is rightful that a good-sized individual will fetch a fine dollar on the market.
How to catch: Before atrophy, I found this one to be a little tricky to bag. A preference for the narrow cliff passageways and its nocturnal nature already makes the cougar eel a risky quarry to seek. Additionally, it cannot be caught with a trawl net. Keep an ear up around those rock walls, lest you be caught unawares by a much larger stone eel. Lingers in shallow water.
Withered Ray
Encyclopedia #138
Aberrant form of devil ray
Description:
Rotten webbing spans the wings of this large ray. Sinews stretch and snap as it thrashes in futility.
Tumblr media
Comment: An utterly infernal sight that likely makes for a pungent aroma. To its last breath, it flutters for the wind and waters, like the flag of the ship that is lost to the maelstrom.
How to catch: Though having a slightly higher base value than the sprouting eel, surprisingly, this ray is worth less than the former proportiona to how much inventory space it takes up. That coupled with the observation that it's an oceanic fish, only seen at night, does not make fishing for manta rays a recommended side venture for the easily panicked. If you seek money at this stage ir the story over completing the encyclopedia, you may be better to stick to wreckfish, sturgeons, or even the eels. An upgraded trawl net can handle them, but you will probably have access to bait by such a point when you’ll feel like using one.
Translucent Sturgeon
Description:
The simple clockwork mechanisms of life laid bare as a tenuous, skeletal existence.
Tumblr media
Comment: And not only that, but in such a gorgeously prismatic fashion! At least, if the art is suggesting what I think it may. I believe this sturgeon has made itself quite clear :].
How to catch: Cast or Trawl in oceanic territory around the Gale Cliffs, during the day.
Shattered Wreckfish
Encyclopedia #140
Aberrant form of wreckfish
Description:
A cracked husk of scaly plates sliding atop pulsing miscoloured flesh.
Tumblr media
Comment: Peeling wonderfully, I see. A boiled egg of a fish, huh? At least what I can view are very pretty colors beginning their molt. It's not every day the fishmonger is brought wares capable of descaling themselves.
How to catch: A daytime, shallow-swimmer that can only be caught by rod. Living true to their name, they are best sought out directly above the many shipwrecks around the Gale Cliffs. Due to this, their harvesting spots are usually alongside dredging opputunities.
Bony Wreckfish
Encyclopedia #141
Aberrant form of wreckfish
Description:
Encased in bony protrusions and struggling to move its encumbered fins. Its gills are almost sealed shut by the growths.
Tumblr media
Comment: Fascinatingly, it has fallen victim to an ailment almost exactly opposite of what has happened to the previous fish.
How to catch: ^^^

╰┈➤ AEVUM ISLES :: JUNE FESTIVAL ❂
Throughout the beginning of the summer season, Isle residents gather in multitudes during the day and the night to celebrate the natural world and the communities that share in it. Many traditions find the Aercon and Echoes alike visiting the sandy shores of the Lunar Coast, cleaning up the environment, and showing goodwill to their neighbors with plenty of gifts. Please refer to the ARCANUS ISLE COMPENDIUM for creature and plant references.
OVERVIEW.
The Sunflower Festival
The Sunflower Festival is a month long event taking place from the beginning to the end of June. While the festivities do not last for the entirety of the summer season, residents of Arcanus Isle take great care to enjoy the warmer weather.
Festivities take place during the night and the day. In the daytime, events like the Sunflower Parade or the Lunar Tournament can be enjoyed in the Lunar Coast and Downtown Arcanus Districts.
During the early evening, the celebrations continue with bright fireworks that light up the night sky.
The Solstice Ball
Takes place during the 16th - 30th of June.
The festival concludes with The Solstice Ball, a spectacular event where everyone dresses in their best to dance under the glorious Golden Moon. (see: Notable Legends down below.)
This year, residents will also partake in the grand reveal of a new location: the Viderenox Observatory.
ACTIVITIES:
NOTE: Other activities such as sea shell collecting, beach parties, garden parties and so on are all celebrated during the Sunflower Festival. While you may create member-run mini parties and events during the festival, only interactions with the listed activities/areas will be considered valid forms of festival participation.
For a limited time, a number of Sunflower Festival wares can be purchased (for free!) from the Aevum Marketplace using the Sunflower Festival Voucher.
Some of these wares include:
Shimmer and Glows Sprinkler - (available only with participation in Nighttime Shimmers and Glows.) An endless sprinkler that sparks and changes color! They are also non-flammable. Lunar Rod - (available only with participation in the Lunar Tournament.) A gold-flaked fishing rod with a special tackle that is highly attractive to the local aevum fish. Fish Charm - (available only with participation in Fish Spy) a small charm in the shape of any fish, made from stones, shells, or wood. Olympic Flag - (available only with participation in the Aevum Olympics) A one-of-a-kind flag with the icon of the sport participated in. Garden Bracelet (available only with participation in Charms of the Garden Activity) A custom bracelet made with several unique charms and beads of flowers. Keepers of the Land, Sky, and Sea Shirt (available only with participation in the KLSS) A cool, breathable t-shirt displaying the logo of the volunteer organization. Homeworld Wares (available only with participation in the Gateway Flea Market) These items are custom to each Echo, and are subject to the rules detailed in the event below.
Requests will be processed from June 22nd - May 3rd. All requests should include a link to the thread or drabble that shows the participation in said event, in addition to the stats, and thread pages.
Downtown Arcanus.
Sunflower Parade
One of the many highlights of the Sunflower Festival is the Sunflower Parade! It is a warm welcome to the summer sun and the influx of Ivurie Aether that comes with it. Downtown Arcanus will be decorated with balloons, sunflower petals, and more. Music will be heard during the day throughout the streets. Especially along the Arcanus University campus.
During the cooler hours of the late afternoon and early evening, a float parade is conducted by residents who choose to participate. These floats range from large and small, elaborate and simple.
Notably, the East Tower Company and the West Tower Society are known to be highly competitive during the parade. Each year, they create more and more elaborate floats each year. The not-so-rumour has it that they may even be trying to outdo each other.... While the other rumour has it that they've even gone so far as to try and sabotage each other's floats!
While many floats are crafted by the various notable figures and local businesses of Arcanus Isle (Echoes will find a representation of almost every Aercon-owned business!), the Echoes are equally encouraged to create floats of their own for the parade. Or join in other floats to assist their performances (or sabotage other performances) in an effort to join in the celebration!
Announcing the event on her very own float is is Arcanus’ own Opal Luminous, where you can watch the parade from your home.
Charms of the Garden
This activity is eligible for festival redemption.
A favorite activity amongst festival-goers is to create unique garden bracelet for their friends and family members. There are dozens of different ornaments to choose from, each with their own meaning. All ornaments for Charms of the Garden are created by students at Arcanus University, and the proceeds return to the school's funding.
The charms provided are as follows:
Echo Tree Nut ( peace in change )
Field Fish Feather ( brings good people into your life )
Sapeng Wool ( aid with memories )
Moonview Spring Stones ( rejuvenation )
Lunar Coast Shells ( wealth in the summer )
Heavens Mirror Bead ( mourning lost loved ones )
May Flower Bead ( protection )
Zephyr Lilly Bead ( guidance in dark times )
Orb Flower Bead ( good wishes )
Sunflower Bead ( happiness )
Aether Rose Bead ( balance )
There are multiple locations for bracelets to be created along campus grounds.
THE LUNAR COAST.
The Lunar Tournament
This activity is eligible for festival redemption.
The Trawler Docks are open and bustling with activity! During this time of year, the ocean is flourishing with many forms of sea life.
Some locals offer scuba diving tours of Arcus Cove's coral reefs, while others will gladly rent out boats for other residents to enjoy the clear blue waters.
Of course, the docks are also host to the largest fishing competition of the year: The Lunar Tournament.
There are three main categories that one could enter into: Biggest Fish (measured by weight and length), Most Fish (measured by total weight), and Rarest Fish (judged by leading Marine Biologists of Arcanus Isle). The competition also has a catch-and-release policy, which dictates that all fish caught should be released upon completion of the final scoring.
The winners of each category will receive a cash prize of 1,000 keys, a trophy representing their category, and a brand-new fishing rod!
Fish Spy
This activity is eligible for festival redemption.
Primarily marketed towards families with younger children, Fish Spy is an event taking place in Arcus Cove. Participants are given a bingo card and taken out the coral reefs. There, they can snorkel in the waters while looking for many breeds of fish on their cards. (The cards are water proof!)
Some fish to find that are native to the Arcanus Isle include:
Comet Fish
Gem Fish
Illumenoctopi
Ripple Kelpies
Successfully filled-out cards can be exchanged for a variety of fish charms.
Nighttime Shimmers and Glows
This activity is eligible for festival redemption.
In brilliant displays of wonder and light, a fireworks show is held every Sunday evening along Halycon Beach. Many gather all across the Lunar Coast just to watch the astonishing display. The firework shows change almost every night, with each display being more even grand than the last.
The show is hosted by Vander Bard of the Comet Promenade. Many enjoy watching the show on the Comets Ferris Wheel, especially with friends and loved ones.
Along the Comet Piers and Comet Promenade many shops offer great selections of fireworks, sprinklers, poppers, and plenty of fantastically sweet and savory treats the likes of fair foods.
The Clearview District.
Aevum Olympics
This activity is eligible for festival redemption.
Attention all sports fans! Coming to the Clearview Stadium is one of the most highly anticipated events of the Isle! The Aevum Olympics is the time when Aercon from all over Aevum come to compete in various sporting events. These include but are not limited to:
Track and Field (split between marathon and half-marathon sprints)
Swimming
Wrestling and Boxing
Various sports (e.g., soccer, football, baseball, tennis, etc.)
Pole Vaulting
Gymnastics
Ice Skating
Ping Pong
and many others!
Note: The Olympics can also include sports from an Echoes' homeworld.
All are welcome to come and spectate or participate! There’s just one rule:
No Cheating.
Cheaters will be forced to repeat their event against an Olympian Android. (Specifically, one designed by the event's biggest sponsor, the East Tower Company)
It never loses.
Of course, Aevum’s Tossup is one of the most popular sports. Over the spring, the four teams have been preparing near-endlessly for the playoffs that occur during this event. Now, it is finally time for the four biggest teams to compete for the championship title.
See here for information on the local sport.
Make sure to follow Aevum Daily for updates!
Fanalea District.
The Golden Harvests
No people are more excited about the Sunflower Festival than the residents of the Fanalean Farmlands, and Echoes are encouraged to join in! Beneath the Golden Moon, the Fanalean community ensures that their fields are fully revitalized for the coming crops to grow.
Plenty of help is wanted in the fields to help cultivate and care for the land. Fanalean farmers employ any volunteers to pick up a trowel to clear the fields of Whisper Thistles, care for livestock, harvest the last spring produce, sow summer seeds, and prepare some fields to lie fallow for the season.
Up to 500 keys per day will be offered to participating echoes.
At night, the workers watch in awe as fields of sunflowers begin to glow brightly across the fields, matching the Zephyr Lillies around them. The sunflowers absorb sunlight in their petals, and then under the golden moon, they glow a bright golden color.
Sunflower Feast
During Sunflower Festival, the locals will often spend time experimenting with new dishes and flavors. When new recipes have been concocted, the chefs gather around the bonfire at the center of Fanalea to share them. In fact, the whole community comes together to create new traditions and delights!
Sunflower is a key ingredient in many of the foods found. A glowing, golden tea - called Golden Cortania - is made from the petals of the sunflower. It is especially a fan-favorite. Tins can of Golden Cortania be bought from select shops in the Vesper Town Trading Post.
Some of the foods that can be enjoyed include:
Sunflower Seed Muffins
Pumpkin Sauce Pizza
Eben Root Stew, and many others!
Honeyglow Meadery is also offering Sunflower Wine, which is only available during this festival.
The Aether Reserve.
This activity is eligible for festival redemption.
Keepers of the Lands, Skies, and Seas
As nature is the focal point of the Sunflower Festival, the Padedue Temple, Whisperwind Hacienda, and West Tower Society have combined efforts to create volunteer programs to help clean up and protect the natural world of Arcanus Isle. As this is a joint effort, the Hacienda is focused on education, the Padedue Temple is focused on volunteer work, and the WTS is responsible for funding and advertisements.
Information booths with petitions written by the West Tower Society will be posted all throughout Arcanus. Signers will pledge to protect the environment and spread awareness about ways residents can keep Arcanus Isle spick and span.
Those who sign on to the petition pledge will be made automatic volunteers, where they will be assigned a location to clear up any trash and resident-made debris. These trips involve waking up early, and are often an all-day event. Supplies are provided to the volunteers by the West Tower Society, and Willow Westson has designer a cool shirt with “Keepers of the Lands, Skies, and Seas” written on it. —They're tie-dye!
Most volunteer work will be found along the Lunar Coast. Primarily: Halycon Beach, Arcus Cove and Arcus Reef. But Downtown Arcanus' Quill Pillar Shores, the Aether Reserve's Moonview Springs, and any of the parks across Arcanus are all available volunteer locations.
Merchant Town.
Gateway Flea Market
This activity is eligible for festival redemption.
In the center plaza of Merchant Town, a giant, mysterious tent has appeared seemingly overnight! Instead of the various food stalls and market shops, there now sits a wondrous pavilion called the Gateway Flea Market.
This tent houses brand new stalls full of Aercon selling or trading their random assortment of goods to anyone who may find a home for them.
While many of of the prices come cheap, many other items may only be acquired through trading specific items that may take hours to find. An Echo dead set on a ware may find themselves embarking on a long and arduous Exchange Quest.
Curiously, in some of these stalls Echoes may come upon strange wares. Instead of the usual bits and bobbles however, what makes these wares so strange is that they may be familiar to the Echoes themselves.
These items range from books and journals, to trinkets, toys, jewelry and clothes, tools, decorations, and other such similar items. As with any item, these come at a price, and some merchants drive a harder bargain than others.
The rule of the game? One man's trash is another man's treasure.
Be warned if you see one of the Pyrite Pawners triplets! They are all ruthless in their pursuit of unique items to sell in their shop.
Note: The following restrictions apply: The Items can: - Be items that exist in an Echo's native world - Be pulled from any point in time in the Echo's world, regardless of an Echo's current or potential canon points. - Be minor canon items, background items, and major canon items. The items cannot: - Be any belongings found on an Echo's application, current or future. - be weapons or magical in any way. - be eligible for the Tier Four Homeworld Redemption item. - Be larger than a two-foot cube. - Be items that canonically belong to another character or from a world separate to their own. All items redeemed must not serve a largely important purpose. e.g., Bilbo Baggins could not find one of the Ten Rings. These items must be found in either thread or drabble form in order to keep them. In which, a brief description of what the item is, and may be used is required. The thread or drabble must be submitted to the Aevum Marketplace as proof for approval to put on one's Stats page inventory. Requests will be processed from June 22rd - May 3rd.
Notable Legends.
The Golden Moon
The two moons of the Aevum Isles have always held a certain air of mystery to them. Most scholars agree that the moons are a symbol of Ebenos, while the sun represents Ivurie's qualities. As the understanding of the Aether grows, studies have shown that during select periods of time, one Aether may influx so greatly that it reflects upon the other.
One of these select periods is the beginning of summer, in which the Ivurie Aether burgeons so greatly, it reflects in the largest of the two moons, turning it bright golden color. As the light of the golden moon bathes Arcanus in its glow, it can be noted that plants grow much faster than usual, and the wildlife become more active and present in day-to-day lives.
Many speculate that this phenomena is the Aether replenishing itself in all forms of life. There is, after all, no other time of year where Aevum sunflowers glow as they do during the summer nights. Now, residents of Aevum Isles look to the glowing, golden moon and her many stars for glad tidings, good luck, and rejuvenation.
Stay tuned for more information on the Viderenox Observatory.

Bob (14/24)
This is written in the style of the series 24.
Events occur in real time.
Hour 14 of 24: 11:00 am - 12:00 pm
11:08:46 a.m.
NCIS headquarters:
One of the two guards had turned himself in and confessed, but he couldn’t answer any questions about details, which is why the investigators assumed that he was blackmailed into taking the blame.
The bottom line was that they were just as far along as before.
“I don't believe that,” your incredulous voice suddenly rang out.
That was interesting. DiNozzo and Gibbs became attentive and the latter asked: “What did you find out?”
You looked up: “The helicopter's tracking is off, but I actually just found it!”
The men immediately jumped to you: “Where did you find it? Where is it?”
You pointed to your monitor and said to the men standing behind you: “It’s being offered on the black market.”
“By whom?” Gibbs wanted to know.
“It doesn’t say here. Just that it’s being auctioned this evening at 7:00 p.m.”
“Does it say where?” asked Tony.
You nodded: “Yes, on a yacht. Interested parties will receive the exact coordinates after registering for the auction. Evening wear is mandatory.”
DiNozzo grinned: “Aaahhh, opportunity to present my new suit and impress the ladies.”
But his dream was immediately destroyed by a head-slap from Gibbs.
He walked purposefully back to his desk and said: “We need a plan.”
11:12:23 a.m.
On the coast of Virginia:
The beach was filling up with people, who were taking up more and more space.
Couples were sitting down and flirting, others were strolling through the sand. Several children were playing and building sandcastles, while others were swimming in the sea.
A few boys went exploring and found all sorts of seashells and other things.
At the end of the beach was a small bay that they hadn't seen before. So it was a matter of honor for them to explore it. What could possibly happen? No one would find out.
Carefully and full of excitement about what would await them on the other side, they climbed over the rocks.
There was someone lying there. Was he sunbathing? Rather unlikely, because he wasn't wearing any swimwear.
Would he chase them away? He didn't seem to have noticed them, at least not yet.
So they crept closer carefully. Very slowly, so as not to wake him up, because he seemed to be sleeping soundly.
Then one of the boys hit his foot hard on a rock and shouted: “OW!!!”
The other two flinched and wondered anxiously if they had woken the man. But when they carefully looked over at him, he was still lying there just as before.
Something was strange. He should have moved in his sleep long ago. But maybe he wasn't feeling well and needed help?
When they reached him, they spoke to him, but he didn't respond. Then one of the boys searched for his ID. He found it and pulled it out of the man's pocket.
At the same time, another felt his pulse and felt...nothing. Carefully they turned the man over and saw the bullet hole right in the heart.
“Oh shit!” they shouted and moved away. The person who had his ID opened it and muttered: “Crap…Colonel Fuller, United States Marine Corps, Quantico Base.”
11:46:21 a.m.
Yacht, somewhere at sea:
The thieves were celebrating their success. Their alcohol levels were high and they were cocky.
The models who kept them company were pretty and also not averse to alcohol.
The first officer, who was stone sober and serious and thus seemed somehow out of place, suddenly burst into this relaxed atmosphere.
“Chris? Please stand up and follow me,” Arthur asked him.
“Yes, sir!” he replied, laughing loudly and followed him out to the back deck.
What did the officer want from him? It was dark there, there was no music and no company…hopefully it was something important and hopefully it would be quick so that he could get back to the party soon.
Arthur stopped and ordered: “Stop!”
Chris stopped abruptly.
“Turn around!”
Chris did that carefully and raised his hands as he looked into the silencer of a Walther PPK.
“What do you want from me?” he asked the officer.
The officer didn’t bat an eyelash and simply replied: “Feed the fish”.
Then he pulled the trigger twice and Chris fell overboard. After that, Arthur hid the gun in his waistband and went to the bridge of the yacht.
Without looking up from the nautical charts, the boss asked: “Have you finished the job?”
With a cold, malicious grin, the officer replied: “Yes, boss. The fish have plenty of food today.”
11:57:55 a.m. … the clock was ticking….

I ran ahead. I felt like I was passing strange streets. The ghetto turned into ruins in a few minutes. Gray, thick smoke stung the eyes. The fire raged hotter the closer I got to the main square. The tenement houses were shaking in their foundations. I shielded my head as a block of stone fell nearby. The person in front of me wasn't as lucky as me. Blood mixed with gray dust and stone fragments. So close. I took a deep breath, feeling a sob rising somewhere inside. As long as I passed the dead bodies, everything seemed unreal. But now the thought that it could be me lying here became tangible.
I once heard Zeke say that a soldier is never fully accustomed to death. It doesn't matter which battle he fights. There can always come a moment of breakdown. So you have to be careful. When he said this, I didn't pay much attention to his words. There was finally peace and the plan to invade Paradis did not directly affect me.
The body under the rubble moved slightly. I shuddered. I realized the truth with fear. I wanted to return to my safe post. Away from the fighting. Despite everything, I wanted to turn back and survive. Like the worst coward.
I looked towards the titans in the middle of hell. I picked up the gun that seemed to fell out of my hands out of nowhere. With trembling hands, I squeezed it as tight as I could. I forced myself to take a step.
Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed a dark silhouette on the roof. The figure fired a shot. It missed. In response, I pulled the trigger. I didn't wait to see if the bullet got where it was supposed to. I turned right. I passed the market. The fallen stalls slowed me down for a moment. The crippled, half-dead Eldian extended his armband towards me. He was wheezing something over and over, spitting blood. He probably wanted me to help him. He grabbed my leg.
— Let me go — I muttered.
I could barely hear my voice over the omnipresent rumbling. Its sound seemed strange. The screams and moans around me were driving me crazy.
— Let me go, damn it!
As if in madness, I jerked my limb. I got hit in the head. The man screamed, loosening his grip.
There was only one thought in my head — find the Beast Titan. Just a moment ago he towered over the city. He threw stones, decimating the devils of Paradis. It seemed that thanks to him they would win the war. The usurper was doing worse and worse, surrounded by the Marleyans. But then, out on the sea, the Colossal one appeared. The hot air reached even me, even though the coast was so far away. Ackermann took advantage of the surprise. A deadly blade and dizzying speed. This is what the command warned us about.
When Jaeger talked about how strong his opponent was, I dismissed him. After all, no one could compare to him. Not in my eyes. The man I loved was the hope of humanity. He had plans, dreams and vision. He was appreciated. He became a commander. He led us to victory. And now it was all falling apart before my eyes. We were losing.
I stared at the huge, hairy body. It lay there limply. There was a hole in the neck. The bomb did its job and Levi finished it. He got to a weak spot. Dark, red blood covered the titan's entire neck. I also saw a human hand lying several dozen meters away. White, stained sleeve. I recognized it easily bythe cuff. I sewed a mismatched, colourful button on it myself.
There were no tears or sadness. Only disbelief and rage clouding everything. I blindly made my way back through the streets. As if in madness, I followed the most travelled path. There was no point in hiding in corners anymore. I screamed, angry at the people of Paradis because they had taken everything important from me. Home, battalion, friends and Zeke. Two scouts heard me. I was faster. This time I stopped and watched them die. I hoped I would enjoy it. I was wrong. All I felt inside was unquenchable, raging anger.
Only the sight of Gabi and Falco pulled me out of the strange spiral of madness. For a moment I thought it was just an illusion. They shouldn't be here. They argued furiously. A dead enemy lay next to them, attached to a strange rope. I followed it with my eyes. It was attached to an airship. The devils wanted to escape on it. Back to where they came from. They flew away against the dark, starless sky. They had managed to change my entire life in a matter of moments and now they had the nerve to leave.
The city lay in ruins. It wasn't the same sight I had seen with Jaeger. An insistent rumble instead of the gentle sound of waves. The screams of dying people instead of the screams of seagulls. The smell of smoke instead of nicotine from the cigarette he was smoking. Red blood instead of a blue, calm ocean. Death instead of love.
Braun grabbed the trigger of the mechanism. Without thinking, I clung to her back. Grice did the same. We zoomed upwards on that damned thing. My legs were hanging freely in the air. I pulled myself up with difficulty, grabbing the handle. The view of the destruction from this height seemed even more gruesome than before. I took a deep breath. The cold air tasted completely different from the air below.
I ran into a small room, firing a burst from my rifle. They stood still for a moment. Surprise attack. Zeke died in the same way. And now I was giving it back to the beautiful Eldians. I laughed hysterically at this irony. I didn't know how many people I had hurt but it didn't matter. Everything lasted a short while. I didn't expect a different turn of events. After all, they outnumbered me.
Someone immobilized me. He earned two kicks. It was all I could do after the rifle was taken away from me. I spat in his face, feeling him punch me back. Soon others joined him. I lost some teeth. The pain in my stomach became nothing compared to the pounding pain in my skull. I struggled but to no avail.
Gabi fought too. She bit and screamed and struck indiscriminately long after she was tied up. Falco knelt calmly, resigned. I always knew the girl was better suited to be the wielder of an Armored one. She had courage that a boy could only dream of.
— Devils! — I screamed.
I hoped that they would finally hit me hard enough to make me lose consciousness. Unfortunately, nothing like that happened. So I gritted my teeth, trying to understand what was happening around me.
They seemed to have no intention of killing children. The commander said something similar. As far as I heard correctly. My head was still buzzing. I laughed out loud. I would have scored another blow if someone hadn't stopped the soldier. Before them stood the candidates of the Marleyan army to take over the titans. And in their ignorance they wanted to take pity on them.
But I was the adult enemy. I had no sympathy, so they unscrupulously aimed at my temple. The barrel nicely cooled my hot forehead. I looked towards the still open door. I managed to catch a glimpse of the sky. Any sight before death was better than the Eldians' faces.
— I'm coming for you, Zeke — I whispered as they fired.

Ophelia lived alone in the woods where no one paid her any mind. Camelot was a pretty big kingdom so no one ever thought about anyone living outside of it.
She lived her life peacefully in her small cottage and her garden, only going out twice a week to sell her herbs and plants to the people in the kingdom and going to the market for supplies.
That was until she earned the curiosity of a certain blond prince.

It's been a year since Ophelia ran away from the orphanage and found the cottage, by now she already fixed and redecorated everything. She woke up to the sun shining through her window, yawning she got up from her bed and walked to her kitchen. It was a bit cold since she only had her nightgown on from the night before but she was used to the chilly morning.
She began cooking breakfast for herself. It was just a simple plate of pancakes. But before she could dig in, she heard scratching from her door and rushed to open it. Ophelia opened the door to a fluffy white cat.
"Good morning, Heinz," she greeted the white cat. The cat, Heinz, just meowed at her back and entered the house. She always assumed he was a stray from the lack of a collar and how he was always dirty whenever she saw it every morning.  She always wondered where he'd run off to every afternoon only to come back the next day.
She once tried giving him a bath but that didn't end well. Let's just say there were a lot of torn curtains and water splashed everywhere.
Ophelia shrugged off her thoughts and closed the door. She opened the cupboards above her kitchen counter to fetch Heinz his meal. She brought him food so everytime he visited her he'd have something to eat. Grabbing a spare bowl from her dish rack, she poured the tuna in. "Here's your meal Heinz," she called out to the cat.

After eating her meal she took a quick bath in the springs near her cottage and changed out of her nightgown. Ophelia now wore a brown dress, a black cloak, and black boots.
On her way out, she took a basket that was filled with seedlings she grew. She was about to leave until Heinz ran at her before she could close the door. "You wanna come with me today Heinz?" she asked the cat, even if she knew he couldn't answer her back.
She walked a few feet away from the cottage before turning back, she placed the basket down next to a waiting Heinz. Ophelia held out her hands akin to a music conductor and the ground suddenly trembled, plants from all around rapidly grew in sync, vines dancing and curling around the cottage enough to obscure it from anyone who wandered near.
Ophelia dropped her hands back to her sides when the cottage was fully covered. "That should do it," she picked up the basket from the ground and Heinz, who climbed up to her shoulder. She bunched up her dress and cloak and began to walk out of the forest.
She stopped at a stone wall that blocked her path. "Well that won't do. Right Heinz?" she asked rhetorically but the cat meowed back. Without a second later a branch from a nearby tree grew towards their direction. She hopped on and the branch began to lift them over the wall.
"Thank you, mister tree!" she exclaimed as they stepped off the branch, now over the wall. She waved away the tree branch as it retreated back to the forest.
Ophelia looked around the alley they landed in to make sure the coast was clear. After confirming that it was safe she began to head to the town's market. "Do you want anything before we set up the stand, Heinz?" she looked at the cat that was still perched on her shoulder.
The cat only looked at her and meowed. Nodding as if she understood him she continued on her way to the market.
She snuck through the dark walkways towards her small stand. The market wasn't that busy yet as it was still early in the morning. Ophelia took off her cloak and started to clean the small stand and set up a few pots. She took out the seeds from her basket and began planting them in each of the pots. Growing them as she did so.

An hour later and she finally finished setting up her stand. By the time she finished, the market was starting to bustle. During her preparations Heinz wandered off to who knows where. She patiently waited until the nice elderly lady from a nearby stand approached her.
"Good morning, dearie!" the old woman greeted her. "Good morning, ma'am!" Ophelia greeted back. "Are you going to buy another plant?" she asked the woman. The old woman always went to her stand whenever it was open and always bought something. Ophelia wouldn't be surprised if her backyard was already filled to the brim with plants growing everywhere.
"You already know it! Anything new you decided to grow this week?" the woman inquired. "I have this new plant I decided to experiment with. It's called a Bougainvillea. It grows in different colors!" she told the old woman.
The old woman awed at the plant. "Well I'll take it!" she cheered. Ophelia taught the woman about everything she needed to know to grow the flower as she sold it.
"Have a good day, dear!" the woman shouted to her when she walked away. Ophelia waved at her as a response.
The day went as usual, people buying her plants from time to time and talking to her. She was well known around the town's market but no one ever knew what her name was. They just referred to her as the beautiful young lady who sold plants in the town's market.
𖤣.𖥧.𖡼.⚘
Hours later, the sun was beginning to set. Houses and market stalls lit up their areas with lamps. All except Ophelia who began to close her stand. She removed the remaining plants from their pots and turned them back to seedlings. She moved them to small bags with dirt and replanted them.
Once she was done, she gathered all the remaining seedlings and put them at the front of her stall. She left them there for anyone who wanted to take them. She had enough to spare so she couldn't really care.
As she was leaving she met up with Heinz. They walked through the busy streets of the market blending into the crowd.
𖤣.𖥧.𖡼.⚘
Somewhere else in the kingdom a certain blond prince snuck out of his bedroom window and into the bustling market that was already lit full of lamps. He wasn't allowed to leave his room after being grounded.
Apparently you weren't supposed to wander away from the knights when they were patrolling, especially when they're guarding you, the prince of the whole kingdom.
𖤣.𖥧.𖡼.⚘
Earlier that day, Tedros was exiting the palace grounds with the knights that were patrolling around the kingdom. Bidding his father farewell, he followed the knights on their horses to the different places around the kingdom.
Around a few hours in, he saw something that caught his eye. The knights he decided to follow were posted by the market. He was advised by his father to observe the knights, saying it was important for him to know the state of the kingdom.
Tedros looked at the busy knights patrolling around the market and walked towards the area where people were surrounding. He couldn't see what they were so excited about but by the sound of the people pushing each other he could tell it was interesting.
He almost couldn't hear anything from the mixed voices until a soft voice cut through the crowd. "Everyone please calm down, there are plenty of plants for all of you," at the sound everyone suddenly calmed down. To anyone else they would've assumed it was the voice that calmed them down but to Tedros he saw how a plant in particular started to waft it's scent through the crowd.
'That's unusual...' Tedros thought to himself.
The crowd calmed down enough that he could finally see where the soft voice came from. It was a girl, probably the same age as him. She looked beautiful. His breath got caught in his throat. He felt his face grow hot.
She looked so kind. He was so caught up in his own thoughts that he didn't realize he was the only one left of the originally small crown and the beautiful girl he was admiring was trying to talk to him.
"..ello? Sir? Would you like to buy anything from my plants?" He snapped out of his thoughts when he saw the beautiful girl staring at him waiting patiently for him to say anything.
Once he realized his embarrassment he sputtered over his words. "Uh– uhm..." He couldn't muster up anything to say.
"I'm assuming you're new to my stall. Would you like a recommendation?" The girl patiently asked him.
"Y-yes..!" Tedros internally face palm himself of making a fool of himself again.
The girl chuckled. "You're weird but in a good way," she told him. Tedros wanted nothing more than for the ground to swallow him at that moment.
"Since you're new to this whole thing, I would recommend a snake plant. They'll thrive in any light condition but you'll have to take care of it," she took the small snake plant that was growing from a small pot. "But it is a bit pricy though," she worried.
"That's fine! How much is it?" Tedros didn't really care about the plant. He just wanted to talk to the girl as long as possible. He got out the pouch filled with gold coins from his back pocket.
He took some out, "will this be enough?"
The girl looked at him baffled. "That's more than enough! But I don't think I have any change for that amount..." she looked at him worriedly.
"It's okay. You can keep the change," Tedros replied enthusiastically. He always made girls swoon with his status. Surely this would woo her.
"But–" she started only for her to feel him take her hand and giving her the gold coins. "Take it," he said genuinely.
"If you say so... Would you like me to put this in a bag?" She accepted the coins and went under the desk to get a bag.
"That would be pretty girl– I mean– pretty good! Pretty good," Tedros caught himself from making a fool of himself again.
Once she finished bagging the plant she handed it to Tedros. He took it from her and was about to thank her, when the knights approached the stand.
"Your Majesty!"
He turned to them but looked back at the stall. The girl was nowhere to be seen. "Huh? Miss?" He called out but didn't receive a reply.
Before Tedros could start to find her the knights arrived. "Your Majesty, you are not supposed to leave the knights' side," the knight that seemed to lead the others scolded him.
Without getting another word out he was escorted back to the castle, still holding on to the bag fearing he'd accidentally drop it.

Bad Thoughts Give Me Bad Dreams
(Dragon Scott au with flower ranchers)
Many years ago, dragons, humans, and hybrids lived in peace. The humans had land and farms, and the dragons had mountains and skies. The hybrids were free to pass through either domain. That was until dragons discovered magic. When the humans found out, they got increasingly jealous. Soon the humans convinced the hybrids that the dragons were too powerful. The hybrids and humans attacked the unsuspecting dragons, wiping out many of them. The remaining dragons refused to fight and turned to hide. The dragons disappeared without a trace. No one knew where they fled as they did not return to the mountains. Even after all these years, many humans were still set on hunting them down.
Somewhere in the sea on the coast, is a cave. Deep within this underwater cave, leads to a hidden civilization. Once a lush cave had grown into a sanctuary for the remaining of the fallen race. The walls shifted from stone alto diorite to calcite. Glow from berries glimmered in the amethyst clusters dotted around the cave.  Vines hung from ledge to ledge, from stalactite to stalagmites, and decorated nests. Moss and azaleas were used as bedding and padding, magic growing the azaleas into trees. Using the same magic, crops were grown. Fresh spring water flowed down one side of the cave. Dragons walked around and glided through the air as they chatted and lived peacefully. A market was in the middle of the refuge. Many sold fish, or the more darning ones sold game from the surface.
A pair of dragons watched the bustle of their kind from a small ledge. On the ledge was their nest. Two eggs were resting in the center. A crack appeared on the shell of the larger egg. Both parents turned eagerly and watched as two tiny legs pushed out of the shell, cracking the egg fully. A purple-haired hatching sat in the middle of the eggshell, its black wings were visibly strong, and its horns shone proudly. The parents only admired their hatchling momentarily before the other egg cracked.
Unlike the first hatchling, a small hole was formed, and a small face poked out. The hatchling pushed hard against the shell and popped his head out as the top of the egg cracked. A startled squeak came as he rolled out of the egg. This hatching had cyan hair, small horns, and weak wings, but his claw-like hands were webbed with a fin-like tail. The parents were ecstatic that they had a sky-borne and a sea-borne hatchling.  They dubbed them Xornoth and Scott.
As the years passed, the siblings soon grew from hatchlings to fledglings. Xornoth was the first to learn how to fly. Scott struggled to fly due to his features but could glide for long periods. When it came to learning how to swim, Scott flew through the depths, while Xornoth struggled to stay afloat. The cyan-fledging soon learned he had gills on the side of his neck, allowing him to breathe underwater.
While being different, both brothers were extremely close. They played, fought, and shared everything. But one thing they both loved was the days of homecoming. Every six months, they would race to the cave Gate and wait for the exploration team to return. The Gate was the water passage that led to the cavern. It was protected by a strong magic to only allow dragons through.   When the older dragon appeared from the water, everyone cheered as they brought new technologies or food for the colony. Scott would watch with stars in his eyes as he admired the team. He made himself a promise they when he was old enough, he would be on that team.
===========
A purple and black blur shot through the cavern air space, a blue flash following beneath. Wedded claws gripped at store roofs, springing across gaps and streets.  A fin-like tail flashed behind as he glided from roof to roof.  Calling out apologizes as he dodges around clotheslines or startled elders. His sibling’s laughs echo above him as they grips their stomach at their brother’s dilemma. A smirk graces his face as they slam back first into a stalactite. They fell onto a nearby roof.
“You deserved that!” Scott snickered as he stepped around Xornoth’s fallen form. They groaned in response to Scott’s jab. Scott fondly rolled his eyes. “Come on, we’re going to be late for homecoming.” Grabbing his sibling’s arm, he pulled them up. They wobbled before shaking themselves off.
Scott leaped off the building with a laugh as he heard an agitated ‘Hey!’ come from his nestmate. He descended into the middle of the street and took off running towards the Gate. Dragon folks of all ages started to converge on the plaza. Scott slipped into the front of the crowd, tail swaying eagerly as he watched the Gate. Xornoth dropped beside him and pushed his shoulder.
“Jerk! I could have missed it,” They complained, crossing their arms over their chest. “And here you would have been.”
“Oh shush! You were fine.” He responded as he rubbed his shoulder with a cheeky grin. “I’ve seen you take worse falls than that. You’re just being dramatic.” Xornoth pouted at him before a gurgling caught both of their attention.
The water in the Gate began to swirl in a vortex and changed in color as the magic reacted. From the vortex, a sea-borne dragon shot up into the air, followed by two sky-borne dragons and then a nature-born dragon. The group landed in front of the crowd of dragons, their arms full of supplies and new shiny objects. But something was off.
A solemn air surrounded the group of newly returned dragons. A wave of confused whispers and murmurs passed through the crowd. Everyone watched the pool, waiting for the other two members to appear. Like everyone else, Scott and Xornoth were concerned by the absence of two of their kind. The sea-borne stepped up with a solemn air to him, hushing every dragon in the process.
“To my dismay, I must inform you Tilly and Dan have sadly perished during our adventure.” The leader informed. A stunned shock settled on the shoulders of the community. “They sacrificed themselves to allow the rest of us to escape from the humans. So let us not waste their sacrifice and forever remember them and celebrate the supplies they allowed us to forge.” The leader tried to lighten the mood.
The crowd agreed, dispersing around the market. A band had begun to play songs of remembrance to grieve their loss, then switched to a more upbeat one. Couples dance in the square, while game stalls begin to shout for players. Soon laughter lifted the solemn mood. Scott watched from a shadowed corner, sitting on a barrel, Xornoth finding him after spending some time enjoying the festivities.
Approaching cautiously, Xornoth asked, “Scott? What are you doing here? You should be out there, having fun.” They sat down on a crate next to him.
“Just thinking.” He replied, watching a bat fly around. Xornoth gave an unimpressed look.
“Scott.”
He didn’t answer for a moment, fidgeting with his tail. His sibling rested a hand on his shoulder and gave a gentle squeeze. “I promise, you can tell me anything.”
Scott looked at them finally, taking a deep breath. “I am thinking of joining the group to the outside world.” He admitted, not looking them in the eyes. “I know how dangerous it is, but I want to do something good for the colony.” He closes his eyes, expecting a backlash. Instead, he got a gentle hug.
“I know,” Xornoth whispered. “I will never stop you from pursuing your dream. Just come back to me safe, that's all I ask.” Scott hugged him back tightly, burying his face into his sibling's shoulder.
“I will promise.”
Xornoth cradled his younger brother close to his chest. “You better or I’m hunting you down myself and turning you into a rug.” Scott laughed wetly as he pulled away. Xornoth grinned and grabbed his hand. “Now let’s go play some games, I’m going to beat you so bad!”
Scott smiled as he walked with them, “No you’re not, I’ll win easily.”
===============
It was the third anniversary of the passing of two of the members of the adventure group. It was also the day when Scott joined the team. All the group was reluctant to let the fledging join their ranks but agreed. The first year was spent learning and observing, and Joel made sure of that. Joel was the leader of the group and a sea-borne like Scott. He was a natural-born leader as he gave instructions flawlessly and proficiently.  Scott learned many skills from him. Hunting, fighting, and stealing are the main ones.
His partner was Lizzie, one of the two sky-borne dragons. She oversaw planning missions and was a rather good fighter. Many of the plans the group chose were approved by Lizzie. When not prepping for a mission, she was rather protective of their newest member. She would cook great meals and sing songs when they were resting. Scott enjoyed her company late at night when she would point out constellations. Her scales were a shimmering sea green.
Next, Grian. He was the other sky-borne dragon of the group. He was a master of disguise and deception. He loves causing confusion and distraction to humans as much as possible. The red-scaled dragon loved any explosive he could get his hands on. Anything shimmery or a button to be pressed, he pushes or takes. When not on a mission, he plays pranks on them. No matter what, Grian is there to make Scott smile. Learning how to set traps had to be Scott’s favorite memory with him.
Last, but not least, was Scar. The nature-borne dragon was Grian’s significant other. While clumsy, he was a master at magic. All dragons knew of some magic, but Scar could outdo them any day. His skill with a bow was incredible and well-practiced. Scar had taught him how to use magic and recite important spells as well as potion making. Scott’s favorite memory is when he accidentally turned the emerald, green dragon into a vivid lavender purple. Everyone had a great laugh.
The second year he mostly allowed Scott to branch out. Engaging the skills, he had studied into practice. The fledging of seventeen rotations soon expanded his reach. He battled in missions with Joel, stole alongside Grian, cast and prepped spells with Scar, and cooked with Lizzie. Scott couldn’t have been happier.
By the spring of the third season, Scott had nearly surpassed all his teachers. He won a duel against Joel. He created a spell all on his own. He even picked up strategizing from Lizzie, helping her to come up with backup plans and escape routes. Everyone was proud of him. Xornoth and their parents were over the moon every time he came home with stories to tell when he visited.
Homecoming had just wrapped up. The team, minus Scott, was planning where they would go next.  Scott walked beside Xornoth, who had grown as well. They were the captain of the guardian force. He was proud of his sibling for making such momentous progress. The two were making idly chit-chat as they headed towards the building where they were residing for the night before heading out the next morning.
Xornoth spoke up suddenly, “Scott… maybe you should hang back this time.”
“What?”
“Just for this year, you know mom is sick so I was just thinking you should be here in case something happens.” They explained, his gaze turned away.
“Xornoth, she has a cold,” Scott deadpanned. “She’s already nearly fully recovered. If something bothers you, just let me know. Don’t dance around it.” He stated bluntly, stopping in his tracks to look at his sibling.
Laughing, “You know me too well. Okay, I guess…” They relent. “I just… have been having horrible dreams about you. In the nightmares, you would be locked in a cage, humans surrounding you. They just seemed so real…” They grabbed his hands, staring him dead in the eyes. “I don’t want to lose you, Scott.”
He pulled his sibling close and engulfed them in a hug. “I vow that I will return to you no matter what. I’ll be careful, I swear.” He pulled away. “Besides, if I’m gone, who’s going to be your annoying little brother?” He gave in a cheeky grin.
Despite looking reassured, Xornoth still seemed troubled. Sighing, Scott compromised, “How about every few weeks I send a letter through flame mail? Will that help?”
“Yeah, just to hear from you.” They agreed.
“Great, now I need to head to the grand hall to meet and plan with the others.” Scott hugged his older sibling once more before letting go.
“Stay safe,” Xornoth called as he walked off. Scott rolled his eyes and called back, “Okay mother hen!” Xornoth squawked in outrage as Scott ran off laughing.
Slipping inside the grand hall, Scott found his companions discussing a map.
“But Lizzie, we can’t go back to Crystal Cliffs, we were just there,” Joel explained. “It would be best if we went to the Southlands.” Lizzie shook her head.
“It’s too far of a journey this time of year. The tides aren’t in our favor.” She pointed to another place; a city built at the mouth of a river. “Midnight Valley is relatively close.”
Grian piped up. “Oh, heck no! We nearly got caught because of that bottlenecked trap!” Using feather-light steps, Scott crept over and gazed at the map. Lizzie huffed in frustration. “Then where do you suggest we head too?”
Grian studied the map and then pointed to a small group of islands. “What about the Coral Isles? They have good resources.”
Scar frowns. “Don’t they have a pufferfish infestation they are taking care of?”
“Ah, I forgot that part…” He slumped in his seat.
“What if we were to head to Ranch Town?” Scott suggested, alarming everyone.
Scar clutched his chest and panted, “Don’t do that! You nearly gave me a stroke!” Scott had the decency to look ashamed. “Sorry Scar.”
Joel looked at the map, considering Scott’s suggestion. “Why would you say that place?” Scott looked up at him and then at the map. “Well, if we were to travel there, we could camp on the small uninhabited shores near the bottom of the edge of civilization without having to cast huge spells. And Joel and I will always have seawater.” Lizzie nodded slowly.
“I see your point, there are plenty of escape routes if we choose to swim upstream.” She traces the river divides, then taps the docks. “They also have the largest world trade port, allowing us to steal some rare necessities.” Joel nodded.
“I agree. We haven’t been there for ages. Looks like we’re heading to Ranch Town.” The leader declared, “We leave in the morning, so prepare accordingly.  Ranch Town is a week’s worth of travel.”
Everything was settled, so the adventurers headed off to bed, unknowing of the strife ahead.
==============
Weaving through the crowds, Joel and Scott dashed through the dock. Shouts followed them as knights gave chase. Tucked in Scott’s claws was an book, he had stolen from a royal merchant ship. Twin cloaks flailed behind them as they fled the scene. The chase had been going on for around a good twenty minutes by now.
Scott was starting to tire as Joel gave a nod, signaling to split up.
Scott turned down a small side street, trying to lose the guards. As he ran, he wondered how this had happened. It was supposed to be a simple operation. Get in and out. But everything went wrong right away. The ship that was supposed to be there was a simple merchant ship, not a royal one. Then the guards swamped the boat. Everyone scattered, guards tailing them. This brings us to where he is currently.
Four guards sprinted after him. He glanced at the book and wondered why they wanted it so obsessively. Shotting out of the alley, he ran into the road, sliding under a cart that nearly trapped him. He snickered as he heard a few cusses, dashing swiftly around a corner, only to nearly run into a horse.
He stumbles into the dirt on his butt. He looked up to yell, only to pale, seeing the head of the royal guard. The head of the royal guard was the prince’s fiancé, Tango. He was a hot head blaze hybrid, fiercely protective of the kingdom. Nearly no one had escaped him before, minus his group. But he was about to clean his record. Scott tried to scramble away, but his boots couldn’t get a grip on the sediment.
“Where do you think you’re going?” Tango hopped down and placed his knee into Scott’s spine, nearly on his hidden wings. The book, long forgotten, fell into the dirt as Scott struggled against Tango, trying to escape. Tango manages to wrangle him into chains as the other knights rounded the corner. Falling limp, Scott realized he was outmatched and outnumbered.
He yelped as his hood was grabbed and he tossed over the horse's back. Tango patted him down, confiscating his small, enchanted dagger and a few regenerating potions. Then the royal knight reached for his cloak clasp. Scott stiffened in fear as he was powerless to prevent the inevitable. He curled slightly as his wings and dragon heritage were revealed. Tango seemed to short-circuit for a moment before recovering, placing the cloak down he turned to his men.
In a commanding voice, “Find the other thieves I need to bring this one to the castle.” Tango orders. “Do not kill. Especially if they are anything like him.” The knights saluted before spreading out to search for his friends.
Scott’s stomach dropped when he heard castle. He couldn’t be serious. But as Tango saddled up, and pushed his horse into a trot, he knew he was in big trouble.
==============
Scott cursed as he was thrown roughly into the cell. He hisses at the guard as the wooden door slams and locks, causing the tower to rumble around him. He glares as he brushes himself off, checking himself over. The cyan-scale Dragonborn had been stripped of nearly everything he owned, left with only the clothes on his back. Sadly, his cloak was confiscated, leaving him only in his trousers.
Glancing around, Scott grimaced.
The cell was circular with a barred lancet window situated above his head, allowing fresh air and sea breeze to filter in. Moonlight cased long shadows but provided enough light to see. The tropical summer humidity caused the cobbled stone to gleam with condensation, making the cell damp. A small wooden bench hung, posing as a poor substitute for a bed, under the window. A tiny wooden bucket filled with murky questionable water was placed beside it—the whole cell smelt of mildew.
Trudging over to the bench, Scott sat down heavily. He closed his eyes as he rested his head against the wall, feeling so stupid about getting caught. Opening his eyes, he stared up at the cone-like ceiling with despair. He should have listened to Xornoth.  He could have spent six months with him. It wouldn’t have killed him to spend time with his family. Now he might not ever see them again.
Ignoring the burning in his eyes, Scott looked at his hands. He looked at his scaly hands and sharp nails. He cupped them together and mumbled under his breath a spell. A ball of light formed and drifted from his hands. A sudden thought came to him, causing him to spring up for the worn old bench. The light drifted above his head as he approached the door.
He nearly laughed at his idiocy. He crouched down and pressed a hand to the cell door. He smirked as he pronounced the lock-pick spell. A click echoed around the small room as the door unlocked. Relief washes over Scott as he pulls open the cell door. He stepped out of the cell, and a narrow staircase leading downward met him. Eager to leave, the dragon leaped down the stairs, taking them two at a time. Scott couldn’t help but feel victorious as he dashed down the stairs.
However, the feeling didn’t last long.
Halfway down the stairs, Scott turns one of the many curves of the staircase. He was in such a rush, that he didn’t realize until it was too late, hitting the prince directly in the chest. They both tumbled, pushing the second person, Tango, down the stairs as well. The trio rolled down in a jumble of limbs and curses. Finally, they stopped near the bottom of the stairs, very bruised and sore.
Scott groaned as he pulled himself out of the pile, groaning as he held his chin where he hit it. He rubbed it, checking for blood, which thankfully there didn’t seem to be. Another groan caught his attention, and he turned to see Tango rubbing his head a bit. The prince just lay on the stairs, looking dazed. He and Tango locked eyes.
Scott bolted. He heard a curse before another pair of footsteps followed him.
Scrambling down the rest of the stairs, Scott practically fell out of the stairway, Tango hot on his heels. Picking a direction, he fled. Much to his dismay, he met two guards right away. Tango called from behind him, causing the knights to notice him. He dodged out of their reach, before continuing down the hallway.
He turned another corner, only to run into a dead end. Come on, Scott thought. I can’t catch a break. He spun around to meet his pursuers, pressing himself back into the wall of the hallway, wings twitching. Tango stepped in front of the two other guards.
“No one needs to get hurt. The prince and I only wanted to ask you some questions and offer you a deal.” He had his hands in a passive position in front of him.
Getting defensive, Scott snarled, “Let me go. Like I would ever help you.” He barred his teeth, at the blaze hybrid. Tango's face fell in a scowl.
“You were caught stealing. Normally, thieves would be sent to work in the mines for a few years. But you’re a special case.” Tango explained.
“And why’s that?” He snapped, his tail whipping aggressively. Footsteps came from behind the group. The guards moved, revealing a disheveled looking prince. A low growl rumbled from Scott’s throat.
“Because we need your magic knowledge.” The prince stated as he fixed his crown. Scott’s eyes scanned him as he towered over him. The canary hybrid stood nearly head over him. Golden feathers ruffled on his head wings. He had sandy blond hair with muddy tried brown eyes. He was clearly near Scott’s age but his eyes mirrored an elders.
“Why?” The dragon asked suspiciously.
“Please. Humans have begun to invade our land. Many hybrids are dying, like many of your kind did.” To Scott’s surprise, the prince knelt and bowed to him. “Please. We’re desperate. I sincerely apologies for the treatment you had this far. I promise, as Jimmy Solitary, so to be king of Ranch Town, that you and your kind will have protection here for as long as I live.” Jimmy had his forehead practically touching the floor. All the knights copied his movements.
To say Scott was lost was an understatement. First, they imprisoned him, then they asked him for help. He shook his head a bit, feeling overwhelmed. “How do I know this isn’t a sick trick?” Scott deflected.
“Please, if it was trick, do you think we would be bowing and not just torturing you?” Tango said with a bit of an eye roll, but something felt off as Jimmy shot him a glare. Scott gulped at that. It was a good point.
“Fine,” Scott admitted, “But what would you need me to do?” Scott questioned.
Relieved, Jimmy stood up from the floor. “If possible, we need more of those potions you had on you. Plus, if you could perhaps make our weapons enchanted as well.” Jimmy thought for a moment. “We’ll provide everything you need to create them as well.”
Scott couldn’t believe he was hearing. It was like something from a dream. Those simple everyday things dragons could do, but the problem was supplies to create them. So having access to everything was a blessing. Biting his lip, his ear fins flicking with thought.
Scott sighed, “My group and I will help you out as a trial run, until we can trust you.” He spoke. “But know, we will never show you where we hide.” He promised.
“Deal!” Jimmy exclaimed excitedly as he took Scott’s claw and shook it. “Thank you, thank you so much.” Scott awkwardly patted his shoulder, feeling as though he made a deal with the devil.
“Yeah, well as long as we remain behind the scenes, I don’t mind helping.” He added on. “And free meals and comfortable rooms.”
Jimmy laughed, his personality doing a one-eighty. “Of course! In the morning, you can go out to find your friends. But please, allow me to show you to your proper room.” Jimmy grabbed his hand and guided him down a corridor. A staircase later and another hallway later, they reached a door.
Tango opened it, revealing a small bedroom. To be honest, it wasn’t much bigger than the cell had been, but it was furnished with a bed and a dresser. A rug covered the stone floor, but there was no window, only touches for light. Scott reluctantly stepped through the doorway.
“Oh, by the way. Tomorrow we will also discuss your punishment, after all, you still stole royal property.” Jimmy added slyly. “Don’t worry about it too much, Cutie. We can add it into the contract that we’ll create we all your friends are here.” Jimmy gave a Cheshire grin. “Sleep well, little dragon.”
With that the door was slammed closed and locked. Scott could hear something being put in front of the push door, locking him in with no way out. Standing in the dark of the room with only torchlight as company, Scott had a feeling he had just sold his soul.
Scott crawled into the bed and cried himself to sleep that night.
=============
It was four years later; Scott found himself sitting on the arm of King Jimmy’s throne, dressed in the finest clothes, sitting beside the king himself. The war had finally ended. With the dragons’ help enslavement, the hybrids were able to conquer over the humans, restoring balance. During the war, many dragons had moved from the cave to Ranch Town, having decided to be forced to help.  After dragons were able to begin normal lives in Ranch Town and live happily above ground, free to fly or swim wherever they please. But as per the agreement, Scott must serve an extra two years for his crime.
Jimmy and Tango had married before the war was announced, officially making Jimmy king. Scott was worked to the bone through the first year in captivity. Many potions and weapons nonstop, his hands would blister from how much nether wart he had to touch. His scales would be dry and flaky by the end of the day due to the heat of the brewing stands. Tango had taken notice one day and had him moved.
From then on, he was Jimmy’s personal servant and guard, much to his friends’ protests. Scott simply told them not to worry and continued with his job. Jimmy soon took a liking to Scott, becoming friendly with him rather quickly while Tango was on the front lines. When Tango was sent back due to an injury, he also had taken to a liking to Scott, but much more slowly. Scott, oblivious to royals’ affection, was focused on protecting everyone he endangered. Even when the war ended, Tango and Jimmy agreed that Scott was theirs.
The royals decided to host a ball celebrating the victory, which is where they are now.
Jimmy leaned over and murmured into Scott’s ear, “Come on Scott, don’t look so glum. I know you want to go be with your family and sibling but we’re your family now as well.” A shiver when down his spin at the hot breath on his ear.
A choked off squeak escaped the cyan dragon as Tango petted his wing. “Yeah, we could have lock you in your room for the night, but we graciously allowed you to be here with us.” Tango gave him a small kiss on the forehead. “So don’t be so ungrateful.” Tango chastised lightly.
Scott early on had learned how to get under their skins. “Yes sirs.” He replied sadly. Both frowned instantly.  Neither of them wanted to cause their little dragon to be mad or upset. But they both agreed that sometimes it was needed. But this wasn’t one of those times.
Jimmy tried to recover, “Maybe later you can hang out with Xornoth, they are staying the weekend. But we haven’t seen much of you all week.” He whined, holding Scott’s hand.
“Yeah, and I was only teasing about you room.” Tango added. “We just missed you, cutie.”
Scott smirked internally, having admittedly, started to gain feels of his own towards his to captors. He nodded a bit on the outside, “Okay…” He yawns as he rubs his eyes, having decorated and planned most of the ball himself.
Both Jimmy and Tango melted. Pulling the sleepy dragon into his lap, Jimmy rested him against his chest. Said dragon barely noticed, having done this millions of times, snuggled into Jimmy’s chest. He closed his eyes, falling asleep to the lull of the conversation in the ballroom.
“Sleep well, little dragon.” Both whispered with soft possessive eyes.

TAZ November Celebration 6: Truth
Just a short, kind of silly one for this @taznovembercelebration ficlet! My card was "truth," so here's one about Magnus trying to lie, to the despair of actual professional liar Taako.
Taako was a champion liar. It was a skill he'd honed through years of practice and one that had saved his ass more times than he could count. He could lie unabashedly, about anything, to anyone, and he'd do it while looking them straight in the eye. He had once convinced Barold that he was both SCUBA and forklift certified.
This deception-based superpower of his had only one weakness, and that was one of his dumbass friends opening their big mouth before he could spin his web of lies. Unfortunately, this was precisely the situation he now found himself in.
He had been helping Magnus pick out an engagement ring, and doing–in his opinion anyway–an excellent job at keeping him somewhat sane. No, Julia wouldn't care if the stone was lab-grown. Yes, the whole ‘three-month salary' thing was made up by diamond sellers. No, Julia wasn't one of those penguins that courted each other by exchanging rocks, and she would probably say yes even if he proposed with something from Dollar Tree.
Everything had been going rather well, all things considered, until the shop bell rang and in walked Julia herself. Her face lit up when she saw them.
“Julia!” Magnus exclaimed, completely failing to look unsuspicious. “What are you doing here?”
“I'm picking up my dad's watch for him, he sent it here to get the band fixed. What are you doing here, hon?”
Taako opened his mouth to deliver one of his trademark bulletproof cover stories, but before he could get a word out Magnus charged ahead with his own panic-fueled explanation.
“I'm helping Taako!” he said. Not a bad start. “Pick out a gift!” Plausible, even if Magnus wasn’t too high on the list of people Taako sought jewelry advice from. “For his boyfriend!”
Ah, fuck, there it was. Rule one of crafting a believable lie: don't invent something that will invite a lot of follow-up questions. And that was exactly what Magnus had just done, as evidenced by Julia's face lighting up like a neon sign.
“You didn't tell me you were seeing anyone!” she exclaimed.
Taako jerked his head noncommittally. “Eh, you know me, I tend to keep it pretty chill.”
“But you like this one?”
“Yeah, he's pretty great.” Well, he wasn't going to have a shitty imaginary boyfriend.
Julia shifted her canvas grocery bag to a more comfortable position, signaling that she was prepared to discuss this for a while. “Well, what's his name?”
“Kravitz.” Hmm. He just sort of had that one ready to go, huh? That would warrant a little pondering later. Then, because he knew Julia wasn't going to be satisfied with just that, he added, “He's a cellist.”
“Wow, that's awesome! You'll have to introduce us sometime. In fact,” she laid a hand on Magnus’ arm. “We're having a little get-together on Saturday, just a few of us. I don’t want to push, I know meeting the friends can be weird, but I’d love it if you and Kravitz could come!”
“For sure,” Taako said, his control of this lie slipping with every second. “I mean, I'll have to check in with him about his work schedule, he's pretty busy right now.”
Julia nodded. “Well, I hope you can make it! Good luck with your gift shopping.” She gave Taako a smile and Magnus a peck on the cheek before walking over to the store clerk. As soon as her back was turned Taako glared at Magnus.
“What?” Magnus mouthed with a shrug. Taako rolled his eyes and pretended to peruse the men's rings until Julia left the shop.
“So,” Magnus said once the coast was clear, a broad grin spreading across his face. “Tell me about this Kravitz guy.”
Right, Kravitz. Taako’s hot goth neighbor Kravitz. Kravitz, who really was a professional cellist, with strong hands that Taako could imagine doing all sorts of things. Kravitz, who he saw at the farmer's market sometimes, who always asked him what mushrooms to buy or which wine went best with whatever he was making. The guy he had completely normal, neighborly feelings about.
Taako rolled his eyes. “There’s nothing to tell, my man. I had to tell her something to cover up your shitty lie.”
Magnus had the audacity to look hurt. “What was wrong with it?”
“Well, for starters, you’re making me fabricate an entire relationship in four days.”
“I mean, you could just tell her you’re busy.”
He waved this suggestion away. “No, no, I can make it work, you’re just gonna owe me for it.”
Magnus’ shit-eating grin returned, undeterred. “Okay, but you gotta let me be the best man at yours and Kravitz’s wedding.”
Taako glared at him. “That’s gonna be real hard to do from six feet under, Burnsides.”
Little though Taako felt he deserved it, he helped Magnus through the rest of the ring-choosing process. He settled on a reasonably-priced sapphire with a silver band molded into the shape of a flowering vine, and he left the store with the box clutched in one hand like he never intended to put it down. Once they climbed into his truck he stopped for a moment and turned to Taako with an uncharacteristically serious look on his face.
“Hey, I really do appreciate you doing this,” he said. “It means a lot.”
Taako shrugged. “Don’t mention it, my dude. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to find out if I’m going to have to move to a new building next month.”
He took out his phone and pulled up Kravitz’s contact information, which he had spent two weeks figuring out how to get. He had been planning to use it for a leisurely flirtation that would eventually end with him figuring out that Taako was the hottest thing since Pompeii. Instead, he pulled up their chat and prepared to send a message that would either get him blocked or into a stellar fictional relationship.
hey, so whats ur general opinion on schemes, plots, and shenanigans?
